Examples of Duties

The Public Works Water Division is looking for one dedicated individual that has a good work ethic and can work with a team and on occasion work alone. Our team works in all weather conditions, responds to afterhours emergency repairs (as, needed), observing safe work practices and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment.

The water division installs, maintains, and repairs water distribution infrastructure including service lines, hydrants, pumps, and storage facilities. We also inspect water service for code compliance. This is a water distribution position - the City of Tigard does not operate a water treatment plant.

Installation, repair and replace:

• Water distribution main lines

• Fire hydrants

• Water meters

• Water service lines

Performs maintenance that includes:

• Water main flushing

• Water valve exercising

• Fire Hydrant maintenance

• Maintenance around water meters

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade AND

  • One (1) year of experience in construction, repair, operation, and maintenance of streets, underground utilities, routine service of light and heavy vehicles and other power driven equipment, or parks and landscape.

    Licenses and Certifications

  • Possession of a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.

  • Within six (6) months of the date of entry into the position, must obtain a Standard First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.

  • Within six (6) months of the date of entry into the position, must obtain a CPR Certification.

Supplemental Information

Union Representation: SEIU

Schedule: Generally, working days are Monday through Thursday one week (9-hour days) and Monday through Friday (9-hour days Monday through Thursday and an 8-hour day on Friday) the next week. This schedule provides 3-day weekends every other weekend.

Compensation for Utility Worker I: The hourly range for this overtime eligible position is $23.75-$31.83 per hour. The starting pay assignment, based on an analysis of the successful candidate’s related experience and education in accordance with the City’s pay equity policy and the Oregon Equal Pay Act, would be no higher than $28.87 per hour.

Additional Information:

The successful candidate will pass a physical capacities test designed to evaluate ability to perform the essential physical functions of the job.
