The Department of Internal Medicine and the John Ritter Research Program in Aortic and Vascular Diseases in McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Instructor position.

The genetic counselor will work in a cardiovascular genetics program affiliated with the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston genetics clinic, multidisciplinary aortic and vascular disease clinic, cardiovascular surgical program, and other institutions in the Houston area, includingBaylor College of MedicineandTexas Children’s Hospital.

The genetic counselor will oversee and recruit patients for an international consortium to define the phenotype associated with genes triggering vascular diseases, the Montalcino Aortic Consortium. In addition, the genetic counselor will coordinate the John Ritter Research Program in Aortic and Vascular Diseases, a collaborative program that raises awareness of aortic disease; and, provides accurate and timely genetic information to families with inherited vascular diseases.

Applicants must be desirous of working in a highly interdisciplinary research, clinical setting and participating in collaborative research efforts.

POSITION KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The genetic counselor will provide genetic counseling for patients in a clinical/diagnostic setting (clinic and hospital) and will screen, consent, recruit, and gather data of patients/families for research and follow-up. The clinical focus will be on genetically triggered vascular disease and research will focus on translating genomic tools to understand the genetics of cardiovascular diseases:

  • Screen and recruit patients and their families with genetic etiologies for their vascular diseases (thoracic aortic aneurysms/dissections and cerebrovascular diseases, such as stroke and intracranial aneurysms) when they meet study criteria for several ongoing research studies.

  • Provide genetic counseling for individuals with or at risk for aortopathies, and other vascular diseases in medical genetics clinic and multidisciplinary aortic and vascular disease clinic.

  • Attend appropriate local, national, or international conferences to present research results and continue their education to maintain genetic counseling certification.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Board-certified or have active candidate status through the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics

  • Abstract, transmit, and interpret information to patients, families, medical records, and other health care professionals.

  • Detail-oriented and the ability to both organize and analyze data gathered through the consortium and from various sources
