UTHealth Houston Ophthalmology is hiring for a Certified Surgical Technologist to join their team of professionals. The CST will work as a scrub technician for ocular surgical procedures and clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments. Ophthalmic surgical experience in laser-assisted cataract surgery and/or oculoplastic surgery is a plus

Position Summary:

Prepares for and participates in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care of surgical patients, under the direction of a surgeon. Functions as a member of the clinical team in a supportive role to deliver patient care that is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Prepares the operating room, including the sterile field, setting up surgical equipment, supplies and solutions, follows Standard Precautions and Transmission-Based Isolation Precautions while wearing required apparel.

  2. Scrubs on surgical cases and participates in surgery by organizing instrumentation and sterile field, handing instruments to surgeon, assisting in exposure of the surgical field and performs related activities.

  3. Performs patient care tasks, that may be delegated by surgeon or nursing personnel.

  4. Performs decontamination and cleaning of the operating room.

  5. Cleans, sterilizes and maintains surgical instruments, equipment and supplies.

  6. Assists RN in documentation of implants, serial numbers, etc. as needed.

  7. Follows standard departmental and hospital procedures for surgery while complying with the preferences of the surgeon.

  8. When not scrubbed in on cases, assists the circulator in the operating room with patient transfer, positioning, management of fluids, obtaining needed items during surgery.

  9. Effectively participates in planning and preparing for patient clinic visits ensuring appropriate schedules, test results and clinic specific requirements are available.

  10. Answers patient questions regarding surgery and or procedures as appropriate and designated by physician.

  11. Coordinates with Surgical Reps to assure proper implants/screws/plates etc are available in surgery.

  12. Casting application and removal/Splinting/Bracing in the clinic setting.

  13. Patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include scheduling and organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure room, assist patients with changing to exam gowns, and transfer to exam table if needed.

  14. Assess patient’s general condition and collect patient history. Document health history, activities, medication dispensed/prescribed in the medical record and provides patient education materials, communicates physician advice/instructions to patient.

  15. Wound dressing changes, prepare injections, suture and staple removal, sterile tray set-ups, obtain lab/x-ray reports.

  16. Documents MRI, CT scans, labs, referrals into EMR and educate patient regarding these referrals as instructed by physician.

  17. Documents referrals to other physicians and educate patient regarding these referrals as instructed by physician.

  18. Cleans exam rooms.

  19. Stocks and manages par levels in exam rooms.

  20. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Current certification as Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified

Minimum Education:

Current certification as Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified

Minimum Experience:

One year of experience as a certified surgical technologist

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
