The Work You Will Do:

  • Position Title: Environmental Specialist III

  • Organization: Division of Water Resources Management

  • Description: This is a professional position responsible for implementing administrative and technical aspects of the Onsite Sewage Program on a statewide basis. The incumbent will serve as a team member of the Engineering and Research program.

  • Responsibilities: The incumbent provides technical consultation to Department of Health County health departments and other program stakeholders, reviews applications for approval of components of onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems and serves as a technical resource for Department of Health County health departments and stakeholders.

    The Division of Water Resource Management (DWRM) is responsible for implementing state laws providing for the protection of the quality of Florida’s drinking water, ground water, rivers, lakes, estuaries and wetlands; and the reclamation of mined lands.

    This position plays a critical role in helping ensure Florida’s groundwater and surface water resources, as well as public health, are protected by providing oversight over the implementation of the statewide Onsite Sewage Program.

    Pay:

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Supports the research and engineering section by reviewing applications for product approvals. Prepares decisions and updates the program’s approval listings.

  • Assists the research coordinator with ongoing research projects.

  • Assists in development, coordination, and implementation of statewide policies, procedures and rules of the Onsite Sewage Program.

  • Provides technical assistance and interpretations of health and environmental statutes and rules to Department of Health county health departments, other agencies, professionals, industry, and public, including assisting with reviews of engineer-designed systems.

  • Participates in, prepares, and teaches environmental health training courses for the Onsite Sewage Program.

  • Represents the Onsite Sewage Program at departmental, professional and civic meetings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.

  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.

  • Ability to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to travel.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver's License.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in a related field of engineering (such as civil or environmental), environmental health, environmental science or physical or biological science and 2-years of verifiable related experience or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total or six years.

  • Ability to become a Certified Environmental Health Professional in the area of Onsite Sewage or a Registered Sanitarian within the first 6 months of employment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of onsite sewage treatment systems or wastewater treatment.

  • Knowledge of onsite sewage treatment system rules in Florida.

  • Field experience with onsite sewage treatment systems.

  • Environmental Health Professional certification in the area of Onsite Sewage or a Registered Sanitarian. Coursework in engineering and/or work experience in engineering
