About You

Diageo South East Asia which is a dynamic and fast-growing market – encompassing several countries including Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia – and operating through different business models including fully managed in-market companies, joint ventures and 3rd party distribution partnerships.

We are seeking a Legal Counsel for Philippines to ensure the legal function can fulfil its goal of driving achievement of strategic goals and Performance Ambition and making a valuable contribution to Diageo’s long-term, sustainable success. This role reports directly to the General Manager of the Philippines.

The Legal Function purpose is “Driving achievement of Diageo’s strategic goals and making a valuable contribution to its long-term, sustainable success”.

About the Role

  • Advise on legal and compliance matters across the Philippines to enable and protect market performance with a view on sustainability and simplicity to drive commercial objectives.

  • Lead holistic business performance in the Philippines market as a member of the Philippines Leadership Team.

  • Draft and review business contracts including distribution, licensing, and procurement contracts.

  • Proactively lead the compliance agenda working closely with the Business Integrity Function, provide training on key policies and ensure that business plans are consistent with laws, regulations, and Diageo’s policies.

  • Manage litigation matters including lawsuits and administrative actions while overseeing external law firms to maximise value to Diageo.

  • Embed robust governance, effective compliance and risk management across the region, including pro-active input into preventative actions to address key business risks, managing issues to mitigate impact and risk by early involvement, guiding resolution of issues and creating an environment where legal risk is significantly reduced.

  • Committed to personal growth and capability building, accountable for business performance, and demonstrating the behaviours in pursuit of enabling our Ambition.

Experience required/Skills/Capabilities/Languages

  • Lawyer admitted to practice in a leading jurisdiction, preferably with commercial in-house experience (minimum of 5+ years PQE in a commercial legal role) and extensive experience of leading legal aspects of transactions in multiple jurisdictions, with a strong commercial law background – ability to navigate a changing and, in some cases, ambiguous legal structure

  • Excellent analytical, drafting and negotiating skills, strong commercial and pragmatic approach - applies extensive knowledge of the law and understanding of the business, with proven ability to generate respect from both the business and colleagues for judgement, approach & commitment

  • Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed organisation and to manage projects through and with geographically dispersed teams

  • Excellent professionalism, commitment and integrity, passion for and experience of inspiring and leading people; confident in and sensitive to different cultures and a passion for Diageo’s success

  • Excellence in provision of legal leadership, ensuring that complex legal issues and risks are appropriately communicated and mitigated; proven ability to work in the commercial environment, to identify business critical issues and prioritise workload to align with business needs

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritise, meet deadlines, and budget plans.

  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, including working with internal and external stakeholders
