Description of Duties:

The Chief Diversity/Affirmative Action Officer (CDO) oversees all diversity-related matters and efforts for the College. They develop and recommend programs, services, and initiatives designed to enhance the recruitment and successful retention of faculty, staff and students from diverse and under-represented population groups. They serve as liaison and develop partnerships within the campus community to promote diversity as an essential element of the mission of the College. As required under Federal Affirmative Action Regulations, the CDO will have the authority, resources, support of and access to top management to ensure the effective implementation of the affirmative action plan. They provide complaint resolution and investigate complaints regarding affirmative action, Title IX referrals and other discriminatory matters. The CDO will serve as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance officer for the college. The CDO must regularly assess and report, whether the campus is fully complying with equal employment opportunity, non-discrimination, affirmative action and ADA requirements as they apply to ESF's academic, staff and student employees. The CDO will report directly to the President.

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

  • Implement and evaluate the College's diversity, inclusion, and equity strategic plan and updates consistent with the goals and objectives set by SUNY and ESF.

  • Chair the College's Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Committee; working groups and related activities ie. Project Inclusion; an ongoing, IDE college-wide resource inventory.

  • Create a diversity recruitment plan and collaborate with Enrollment Management to implement strategic planning related to undergraduate and graduate admissions.

  • Guide campus in efforts to recruit and retain a diverse student body, faculty, and staff offering appropriate assistance to departments to achieve diverse applicant pools for academic and staff positions.

  • Review all recruitment/request to hire documentation and post all full searches on the college's job vacancy site and other external recruitment locations.

  • Provide training to faculty and administrative staff regarding equitable search procedures and monitoring and approving of recruitment/search process.

  • Administer the College's Affirmative Action Plan including data collection and analysis, maintenance of records, and the preparation and submission of required internal and external reports.

  • Participate in the investigation of human rights complaints (discrimination, ADA etc.), administer the internal discrimination grievance procedures.

  • Use knowledge of federal, state, local, and SUNY laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to facilitate appropriate resolution to reports of bias-related incidents. Identify and coordinate appropriate actions (referral, trainings, and counsel) for any identified trends or patterns identified.

  • Develop educational and outreach programs regarding the college's responsibilities and obligations under the ADA and implement policies and procedures involving disability requirements and responsibilities, establishing and enforcing standards.

  • Lead the SUNY PRODiG initiative and submit required reports and proposals.

  • Serve as an alternate Title IX Investigator for students and employees.

  • Serve as part of a SUNY system-wide network of CDOs to support SUNY's overall diversity goals.

    Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and a strong administrative and academic record of progressively increasing responsibility in a higher education setting.

  • Administrative leadership skills in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion with experience in resolving grievances and complaints.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines related to affirmative action and civil rights enforcement.

  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.

  • A track record in developing and implementing diversity programs, and affirmative action plans.

In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act" institutions of higher education are required to prepare an annual report containing information on campus security policies and campus statistics. This report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on-campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by SUNY-ESF; and on property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies concerning sexual assault, and other matters.
