Southwestern Community College Assistant Comptroller in Sylva, North Carolina

Statement of Primary Purpose The Assistant Comptroller serves an integral role in the financial services department. Responsible for completion of reconciliations and financial reporting, maintaining compliance of financial processes while assisting the Comptroller in managing the Colleges reporting function. The position will manage the asset database and all reporting associated with the Colleges fixed assets and on-going construction projects. Plays a significant role in financial statement reporting. Provides financial oversight of capital projects and interaction with state, local, and regional agencies pertaining to building and construction.

This position serves as primary back-up to payroll, purchasing, and grant accounting, and performs various month end, quarterly and annual accounting processes.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Working with the Director of Facilities, oversee the financial activities of the Colleges Capital Assets including, but not limited to reconciliation and preparation of construction reimbursement payment requests:
    • Office of State Construction reimbursement and reporting
    • North Carolina Community College System reporting of capital expenditures
    • New construction, renovations and repairs of buildings and facilities
    • Insurance claims for college buildings, content and vehicles
  • Reviews and monitors budget expenditures, prepares journal entries, manages process controls and prepares Board of Trustee reports.
  • Update equipment report when items are sold, transferred, cannibalized, lost or stolen by updating the Fixed Asset record and necessary journal entries. Prepare year-end summary of Fixed Asset additions, deletions, adjustments and depreciation realized.
  • Maintain equipment inventory records and reconcile annually.
  • Backup monthly bank reconciliations of all college bank accounts.
  • Serves as the primary back-up to payroll, purchasing and grants accounting.
  • Works directly with the Comptroller in completing the Foundation Audit, ACFR, MDandA and Financial Statements.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities To perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Education Required: BS/BA in Accounting or BS/BA with 12 hours of accounting coursework. Relevant work experience may be substituted for coursework.

Knowledge and Skills

  • One to three years of accounting/auditing work.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) to produce accurate, professional documents using complicated formulas and other advanced functions, proficiency in Google Suite preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret accounting data and communicate information in a clear and concise manner.

Physical Demands Requires work consistent with that typically found in an office setting.

Licensing Requirement Valid NC Drivers License

Working Conditions and Environment

  • General office setting.
  • Some training related travel possible.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively to meet deadlines.

Equipment Operation Computers with office and accounting applications, copier.
