Walmart Senior, Software Engineer in Sunnyvale, California

Position Summary...

What you'll do...

About the team:

Walmart's Advertising Technology group enables the connection between supplier brands and retail shoppers at unprecedented scale. We are a highly motivated group of engineers and data scientists, working in an agile group to solve sophisticated and high impact problems. We serve billions of ads requests every month with our high-performance ad servers. There are millions of customers shop on Walmart websites and in stores daily, and advertising helps advertisers bring the best products to our customers. If you want to influence millions of customers on their shopping journeys, we have a role for you.

This position is in the Real-Time Targeting team, which is a vital part of Walmart's AdTech organization, responsible for developing cutting-edge technology solutions to deliver personalized and relevant advertising experiences to Walmart shoppers. This team is focused on creating a seamless and efficient advertising ecosystem that leverages real-time data and insights to drive sales and engagement for Walmart's advertising partners.

The Real-Time Targeting team is comprised of highly skilled and innovative individuals who are passionate about using technology to drive business results. We are experts in areas such as software development and data analytics and are constantly exploring new ways to stay ahead of the curve in the rapidly evolving digital advertising landscape. Our next big step as a team is a real-time machine learning. Collectively we own the Real-Time Targeting engine and most of its supporting micro-services - this is the real-time data plane of Walmart Connect Ads platform.

What you'll do:

  • Build real-time data processing services (Scala, Kafka, Cassandra) those will handle Walmart's scale event stream (thousands of messages per second) coming from our website and app.

  • Develop big data applications (Spark, Dataproc, Presto, AirFlow) to process Walmart's size data volume (in petabytes), performing analysis of customers shopping behavior online and in stores.

  • Design systems using the Lambda-architecture patterns (as you can see, we own both event-driven and big-data parts of the Real-Time Targeting solution). Optimize and scale them based on increasing business demand.

  • Troubleshoot business and production issues by gathering information (issue, impact, criticality, possible root cause), engage support teams to assist in resolution of issues, formulate an action plan, performing actions as designated in plan, interpret the results to determine further action, and complete online documentation.

  • Develop software using object-oriented languages such as Scala and Java, perform some scripting with Python and Bash. Implement system measurement and monitoring capabilities (Prometheus, Grafana, xMatters).

  • Perform advanced data investigations using SQL and Spark or Hive. Visualize the findings using Tableau.

  • Design and develop systems and methods for ensuring quality for large data pipelines and guide the product through all stages of user acceptance process.

What you'll bring:

  • Experience programming in an object-oriented language (Java or Scala).

  • Experience building microservices (data processing and APIs) and running them in distributed cloud environment.

  • Experience using Map Reduce in Hadoop batch jobs and Spark streaming services to process large scale data.

  • Experience in creating and maintaining data processing workflows with tools like Airflow (or any other scheduler / ETL tool).

  • Experience using Spark, Hive, or SQL to perform advanced data investigation.

  • Experience developing techniques to ascertain correctness of data processing and transformation implementations using unit, integration, and end-to-end pipeline testing.
