Enhance the Trauma Program development though coordination of daily operations and activities with other departments, services, and referral facilities. Oversee and ensure compliance with local, state, or national organizations for verification and designation including the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and state agencies. POSITION SUMMARY

This position promotes optimal care of the injured patient through leadership, coordination and development of processes related to a specialized service. Assists other leaders to establish, oversee, and evaluate quality of care as well as to identify opportunities for improvement, operationally and clinically. Enhances the program development though coordination of daily operations and activities with other departments, services, and referral facilities. Oversees and ensures compliance with local, state, or national organizations for verification and designation including the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and state agencies.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Responsible for the day to day operations of the trauma program. Evaluates trauma services across the care continuum in collaboration with the trauma medical director and organizational leaders.

  2. Maintains current knowledge of national accreditation/state regulatory requirements, provides oversight of the program, and evaluates compliance, including all related components along the continuum of care. Represents the department at management/leadership meetings and at local/regional trauma related meetings.

  3. Maintains a trauma specific quality program that effectively improves clinical care, processes, and systems related to the injured patient and is aligned with service line expectations and national standards. Coordinates relevant committee meetings and ensures documentation is complete and maintained.

  4. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members across the continuum of care to address quality of care, program development, and opportunities for improvement.

  5. Contributes to the oversight of data processes, from collection to validation to reporting. Develops an understanding of inclusion criteria, applicable injury scoring systems, data definitions, and benchmarking programs such as NTDB/TQIP as applicable. Provides accurate statistical data regarding the program activities, including quality data, evaluation, and validation from benchmarking programs.

  6. Facilitates education for trauma team personnel, including orientation to the trauma program and internal and external education related to identified needs. Oversees community education and prevention programs and participates in identified system supported initiatives and activities.

  7. Assists with developing departmental budget and manages assigned staff as applicable.

  8. This is a highly matrixed position required to influence patient care across the continuum of care and patient outcomes by collaborating across multiple services and specialties. Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action. Internal customers: All facility staff, management, and physicians. External customers: Patients, ACS, governmental agencies, and staff of other healthcare facilities.

  9. Uses knowledge and experience of area to suggest improvements to processes for adult level III trauma centers or pediatric trauma centers. Leader works to influence change and to remove variances that may interfere with meeting ACS and/or state requirements. In burn program/centers, leaders will work to achieve same stated requirements through American Burn Association (ABA).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

DIRECTLY REPORTING

May supervise professional employees as part of program duties, depending on size and scope of program.

MATRIX OR INDIRECT REPORTING

System service line leadership.

TYPE OF SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

If supervising others, has full authority for employment actions including selection, training, coaching, and performance reviews.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Current RN licensure in state of practice. BLS certification required (or specialized life support certification depending on specialty).

Current TNCC required; ATCN preferred. Instructor status in either or both is highly desired. For burn programs, current ABLS certification required.

Minimum of five years clinical experience in a high patient acuity area including experience in related areas specific to clinical specialty, including trauma, pediatric, or burn for burn specific programs. Minimum two years supervisory or leadership experience. Must have American Trauma Society (ATS) TPM course and TOPIC course completed within six months of hire.

Self-motivated, requiring minimal direction. Computer skills including basic office software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations). Demonstrate proficient interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, professional interaction with all individuals and public organizations. Ability to provide departmental leadership, training, and staff development.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional certification(s) specific to clinical specialty.

Prior experience and knowledge of the principles of health care program design, development and implementation.

Previous trauma coordinator/trauma program manager experience or pediatric and burn experience as applicable.

Knowledge of performance improvement, trauma registry data is beneficial.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
