Stony Brook University Instructional Support Technician - Machinist in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a bachelor's degree, four (4) years of full-time related technical experience or a combination of experience and an apprenticeship program or technical/trade school totaling four (4) full-time years may be considered. Two (2) years of full-time related technical experience.Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with conventional milling and lathe work, 3 Axis CNC machining, welding and/or prototype machining. Experience or training utilizing computer design (i.e. CAD/CAM) for manufacturing. Experience with designing and fabricating sheet metal components and assemblies. Experience with interpreting and creating computer models and technical drawings used in the manufacture of complex parts. Brief Description of Duties:
The Instructional Support Technician reports to the Physics Machine and Electronic Shops Supervisor. This position aids in the operation of the Physics Department and campus wide research and instructional laboratories. Incumbent will support experimental physics design and fabrication projects, assist students with fabrication tasks, assist and advise faculty in instructional/research lab safety, maintain and upgrade equipment, and other duties as assigned. The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving and a strong ability to adapt to and creatively solve problems. Duties:

  • Support instruction and oversight of students taking the physics student shop safety course. Advise students on the use of equipment and materials in the student fabrication shop. Manage the maintenance of the physics student shop equipment and services.
  • Assist the Supervisor with consulting with customers prior to fabrication: review or create blueprints, drawings, sketches, and concepts per verbal consultations and redesign where applicable in order to fabricate a component and/ or assembly that is feasible in design, cost effective and will result in a fully functioning component or assembly. Provide aid to research groups for the selection of proper materials and part configuration for their projects. Suggest standard commercially available components when possible.
  • Utilizing CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks and Mastercam), along with traditional manufacturing practices (milling, lathe, sheet metal fabrication & welding) design, construct and/or modify a wide range of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist shop staff in designing and building instructional and research devices based on laboratory needs and faculty specification. Examples may include test fixtures and class demonstration devices.
  • Teach students how to operate equipment and/or operate equipment for students when necessary. Ensure students follow proper safety procedures.
  • Coordinate the inventory of supplies or tooling that may be needed so that it may be ordered.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned and appropriate to rank and area mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
