About this position:

The overall function of this position is to install, maintain, and repair traffic signal control devices. The incumbent possesses specialized knowledge in construction traffic signal control devices. The incumbent safely operates bucket trucks, pole trucks, directional drilling machines, trenchers, pavement saws, and passenger vehicles. The incumbent performs minor repairs and necessary maintenance on equipment and vehicles used to perform tasks. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with no supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Positions covered by this MJD assist the Foreman in the construction and maintenance of traffic signals, including: the installation of telephone cables, fiber optic cables, twisted pair cables, and electronic or computer components to operate traffic signal control devices.

This position is for a Statewide Traffic Signal Construction and Maintenance crew. The ability to work out of town every week is required (lodging and per-diem provided). A Chauffeur's License (Class D) is required to begin employment.

THE STARTING PAY FOR THIS POSITION IS $16.06 PER HOUR PLUS AN ADDITIONAL $2.00 PER HOUR FOR EACH HOUR WORKED

Job Distinctions:

Differs from other entry or basic maintenance jobs by the performance of work directly subordinate to skilled tradesmen with the goal of preparing the incumbent for journeyman level status.

Differs from the journeyman level because it does not independently perform journeyman work in any trade.

Examples of Work

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

65% The incumbent assembles and installs traffic signals in accordance with plans and the current LA DOTD Standards and Specifications. The incumbent inspects all materials used by the signal personnel on a daily basis. The incumbent installs, repairs, and/or modifies new traffic signals and flashing beacons. The incumbent installs electrical service equipment for traffic signal control devices.

30% The incumbent erects new signal poles by using a derrick digger to bore holes in the ground for setting wood poles and building concrete foundations for steel poles. The incumbent uses bucket trucks for installing span wire between poles to support signals, signs, and various cables. The incumbent lashes various sizes of electrical control cable to spans for connecting signals to control equipment. The incumbent installs telephone cables and fiber optic cables to provide communications within DOTD and for other state agencies. The incumbent utilizes electrical testing meters during testing and troubleshooting of electrical service and control circuits. The incumbent sues locators to located existing underground traffic signal wiring and devices that could be damaged during construction projects.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
