Purpose:
Children's Mobile Crisis Teams (CMCT) were created to provide a viable alternative to psychiatric emergency rooms for children and young adults age 0 to 20 who are experiencing a mental health crisis. Staten Island CMCT will respond to a child/young adult in crisis at home, school, or elsewhere in the Staten Island community. Moreover, Staten Island CMCT staff can provide mental health engagement, intervention and follow-up support to help overcome resistance to treatment.

Position Overview:
As part of the Children's Mobile Crisis Team, The Crisis Behavioral Health Clinician is responsible for providing culturally competent crisis interventions to children and young adults experiencing a serious emotional disturbance in the Staten Island community. Crisis Behavioral Health Clinicians provide immediate on-site risk assessment and crisis de-escalation to reduce the risk to the client and the community. Moreover, as part of a therapeutic team within the Agency, the Crisis Behavioral Health Clinician works closely with the divisions' medical, psychiatric and psychology staff, to ensure the appropriate treatment interventions for the client. This position requires rotating holiday and evening coveragebased on program need.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to:

  • Monitors CMCT email and responds within 2 hours of receiving a crisis referral (1 hour for first school referral of the day) for an adolescent or /young adult experiencing a serious emotional disturbance in the community. During initial crisis response performs a risk assessment and a psychosocial evaluation to help identify client and family needs.
  • Works with client and family to create safety plans.
  • Develops and implements short-term service plans for clients in coordination with client/family, team members, and other current service providers.
  • Utilizes a variety of evidenced based practices to provide short-term clinical Interventions designed to reduce risk via identifying effective coping skills and encouraging resistant clients to accept appropriate behavioral health interventions.
  • Maintains all case documentation in the agency's electronic health record system in accordance with program documentation submission guidelines.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and case conferences.
  • Participates in audit preparation.
  • Works with Clinical Director and/or Program Supervisor on intake process for new consumers.
  • Work with Family Advocates to enhance communication and cooperation between them and consumer families.
  • Other duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETANCIES:
  • Clinical Training andKnowledge of mental illness, serious emotional disturbance and substance use disorders.
  • Ability to document clinical assessments, plans and interventions
Educational / Training Required:
  • Licensed Mental Health clinician
  • Valid NYS Driver's License

Experience Required / Language Preference:
  • Minimum of one year of relevant experience with similar client population. Proficient reading and writing English. Pay differential for bi-lingual clinicians if relevant to the population serviced at site

Computer Skills Required:
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Word and Excel
Work Environment / Physical Effort:
  • To perform the essential functions of this job the candidate must be able to travel within New York City carrying equipment such as a notebook, forms, laptop, mobile hotspot and cell phone weighing up to approximately 10 pounds.
  • Risks/hazards associated with the position are those which may be encountered travelling around New York City and interfacing with clients experiencing an acute mental health crisis or serious emotional disturbance.
  • Position is currently hybrid but can become 100% in person based on program need.
