The Modal Transportation Bureau/Rail Team is seeking aTrack Inspectorto support the safe movement of goods on Iowa’s rail network to accomplish the Iowa DOT’s Mission:Making Lives Better Through Transportation.
The person selected for this position will demonstrate actions and behaviors guided by the Iowa Department of Transportation’s five CORE values:Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.
As theTrack Inspector, you will perform railroad track inspection and monitoring functions to assure compliance with federal safety and health regulations among railroads, railroad employees, and contractors to railroads. The primary objective of the Track Inspector is to minimize the risk of human casualty and societal loss due to train accidents caused by defective conditions of railroad track and structures.
Your duties will involve, but are not limited to:
Ensuring compliance with the Iowa Code and Federal Code pertaining to railway safety minimum track standards and roadway worker safety.
Preparing reports of violations and track inspections, investigating complaints from railroad employees, the public or governmental representatives.
Determining the need for and conducting safety meetings and training sessions for railroad employees regarding proper and safe inspection and maintenance procedures for track and roadway facilities.
Investigating significant train accidents resulting in serious injury or property damage.
Initiating and maintaining contacts with employees in other federal, state, and local government agencies and with officials at railroads, labor organizations, and the general public and provides technical advice regarding regulations.
Our ideal candidate will require excellent oral and written communication skills, knowledge of railroad track construction and maintenance, track inspection methods and procedures, and federal and state standards and regulations relative to railroad track safety.
Location : Eastern Iowa. Track Inspector duties will primarily be in the eastern half of Iowa
Shift Requirements : Days, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with flextime available. Hours may vary and may be called during off duty hours for railroad related emergencies. Some overnight travel may be required.
Special Requirements:
Possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. and six years of progressively responsible railroad track construction/maintenance experience which included three years of advanced technical level experience in track and roadbed inspection;
OR
a four-year undergraduate degree in civil engineering, or closely related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university and two years of engineering experience associated with railroad track construction/maintenance.
