Stanford’s School of Medicine (SoM) is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist 2 to join their Safety and Emergency Management S&EM) Team.

The S&EM Team is passionate, collaborative, innovative, and aligned with SoM’s mission, vision, and values. The Health and Safety Specialist 2 position serves as a critical member of the S&EM Team, partnering with their efforts in advocating for compliance practices and continuous improvement through the application of federal, state and local health and safety regulations, and through the demonstration of advanced knowledge in emergency preparedness and recovery procedures. In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to influence and drive change by integrating program goals into standard work practices while serving a community of faculty and staff that are fundamentally changing the world of health care.

The ideal candidate will be able to perform moderately complex technical work in a wide-range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and achieve compliance with the environmental, health and safety standards and governmental requirements.

Responsibilities include*:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.

  • May develop and conduct employee and student training, emergency preparedness activities, and/or assurance and accreditation programs.

  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.

  • Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.

  • Provide onsite support during emergencies and emergency recovery efforts.

  • Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential.

  • Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.

  • Serve as a team lead or technical expert, and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A basic understanding of chemistry and biology, specifically in areas relating to medical research and biotechnology. Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of occupational environmental health and safety with preferably a master’s degree and professional certification in the EHS field.

  • Must be able to independently problem-solve solutions to a wide range of circumstances in a complex organization.

  • Ability to exercise tack and have superior diplomatic and inter-personal skills. Highly organized and detail oriented. Knowledge of computer systems, applications, and web page management.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.

  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.

  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.

  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.

  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.

  • May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals

  • May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.

The expected pay range for this position is $99,000 to $129,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
