Department/Program Description: TheDepartment of Art & Art Historyis an interdisciplinary department offering degrees in art history, art practice, documentary filmmaking, and film and media studies. The team of 16 staff support the research and teaching of 25 faculty and some 30 lecturers each year. Department courses offer opportunities for students to gain enhanced understanding of the meaning and purpose of the arts, their historical development, and their role in society through practical engagement with a variety of physical and digital media and theoretical and critical study.

Position Summary: The Department of Art and Art History Department is seeking a Film Production Program Manager. The Film Production Program Manager will work under general supervision of the Director of Finance and Operations and will work closely with faculty and students in the MFA Documentary Film program to implement operational program directives including administrative, budgetary, and film-specific technical projects. The successful person in this role must be a proven program and project manager with in-depth film production knowledge that will demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset. It is critical that the person in this position exhibit the abilities to manage projects, sound judgment and decision-making, effective written & oral communication, strong attention to detail and respectful relationship management. This position must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies and procedures as they relate to facilitating filmmaking in graduate and undergraduate courses offered in the Department of Art & Art History – the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical.

The Film Production Program Manager conducts technical training, manages film and video equipment, supports editing systems and technology in coursework and in faculty and student research, and manages budgeting and spending. The ability to successfully navigate and adhere to Stanford financial policy and systems is critical for this position. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in the following areas:

  1. Experience and expertise working with 16mm and 8mm film cinema cameras in addition to high end digital cinema cameras,

  2. In depth knowledge of digital audio recording tools; green screen lighting and compositing.

  3. In depth knowledge of video projection including 4k, HD and different aspect ratios.

  4. In depth knowledge of video compression and mastering for distribution

  5. Ability to design production and post-production workflows using in depth knowledge of Adobe Premiere CC software and Final Cut Pro. Familiarity with Asana and WebCheckout is desired.

  6. Experience running and troubleshooting high end film projectors and conduct film screenings.

  7. Demonstrated successful project management and financial management experience, including experience with Asana project management software.

  8. Ability to configure new and existing computers to accommodate film editing needs.

  9. Ability to train others on film and video equipment and software.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing position, exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

CORE DUTIES:

· Plan, research, prepare and produce professional-quality digital media for instruction. Conduct detailed long- and short-term planning, executing and tracking of faculty driven program priorities. Communicate project progress to faculty and key stakeholders.

· Play an active role in planning, advising and partnering with clients on strategic and creative projects requiring extensive subject matter knowledge within time and cost constraints. Supporting faculty research: identifying appropriate workflows and vendors for projects; purchase, configuration, and maintenance of production and postproduction equipment to support faculty filmmaking; media management for faculty projects.

· Take independent ownership of large, complex digital media projects. Perform the full range of the digital media project cycle: initiating, planning, producing, refinement, delivery, and archiving. This includes management and oversight of film/video production hardware and software: equipment purchases, distribution, and returns associated with class needs, inventory tracking, and general maintenance.

· Develop and market digital services, and manage all aspects of capturing, recording, and transmitting of all digital media productions, video and/or images to internal and external clients. Provide outreach within and across departments of effective applications of digital media. This includes Training students, faculty, and staff on film and video equipment and software (cameras, sound recording equipment, lighting, etc.) both in the classroom setting and on an individual basis; working with vendors to organize equipment demos and loans. Providing day-to-day support to the AV environment and classroom computing including edit suites, audio and video capture workstations and hardware, and projection systems; configuring new and existing computers to accommodate editing needs for both graduate and undergrad level production; inventory of hardware and software; troubleshooting hardware, software, and networking problems; perform or oversee vendor repairs of equipment.

· Manage process from conception, to production, to completion across a diverse array of communications channels and media utilizing best practice standards that foster photographic and video excellence.

· Consult with, and help faculty and staff to incorporate digital media into research projects, presentations, course design and curricula in support of student learning or departmental communication goals.

· Manage all aspects of capturing, recording, and transmitting of all digital media productions, video and/or images for internal and external clients.

· May contribute to development of digital media goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and/or manage budget for area of responsibility.

· May serve as internal project leader and provide guidance and training to other staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

· Expert level technical experience using digital media equipment, video creation, editing software, and/or motion graphics and effects software.

· Comprehensive knowledge in production techniques including videography, compression and file delivery and other production formats.

· Extensive knowledge of all aspects of professional quality productions, including field and studio camera, lighting, sound and editing,

· Proven savvy and understanding of online video environment and online distribution.

· Ability to independently manage a variety of simultaneous projects within tight deadlines, excellent organizational and time management skills.

· Demonstrated experience leading and training others.

· Ability to communicate and articulate digital media products and options and adapt to alternatives when appropriate.

· Excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy required to interact effectively with and provide customer service to a broad audience, including high-level executives and faculty.

· Ability to work independently as well as effectively in a collaborative team environment.

· Experience planning, coordinating, and executing archival digitization projects.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

· Master’s degree, especially a Master of Fine Arts.

· Project management experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

· Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks

· Frequently stand/walk, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, and reach/work above shoulders.

· Occasionally sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat.

· Visual acuity including color vision.

· Occasionally lift film/video equipment weighing as much as 50 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $119,382 to $135,000 per annum.
