Position Summary:

Marathon Petroleum Company is in search of a highly motivated Refining Engineer to support the Process Engineering Department in St. Paul Park, MN.

This position reports to a Process Engineering Manager and supports safe, compliant, and reliable operation of the St. Paul Park Refinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Daily process monitoring which includes communicating unit performance, optimization opportunities, and environmental performance. Assist with troubleshooting efforts, unit upsets, product quality incidents, not meeting production plans, etc.

  • Provide support to assigned units and subsequent Area Team through procedure reviews, alarm rationalization, process optimization, chemical usage tracking, project support and all other team needs.

  • Support small and medium sized refinery improvement projects from conception through start-up for short- and long-term viability of the refinery.

  • Provide technical support needed to ensure facility compliance with environmental operating limits, participation in HAZOP studies, and participation & leadership of incident investigations.

  • Participate in and initiate the MOC (Management of Change) process for changes made in assigned process area.

  • Support all turnaround (TAR) related activities for assigned units. TAR activities include generation of turnaround scope, planning activities, support of procedure development, start-up and shutdown coverage, equipment inspections, and outage shift coverage.

  • Utilize computer programs, such as HYSYS and heat exchanger rating programs to identify inefficiencies, design new projects, and optimize unit operations.

  • Manage chemicals and catalysts usage and performance in assigned area.

  • Communicate and work effectively with all departments within the refinery.

  • Be a technical process safety management steward by performing leak calculations, supporting generation of critical process variables (CPV), and participating in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)

  • Generate reports, memos and presentations for assigned units as necessary. Examples of this include monthly unit reports, memos on unit improvements, and technical presentations.

  • Provide unit support outside of normal hours during abnormal operation, start-up, shutdown and TAR activities

  • Some travel for training and professional development will be required.

Education and Experience:

  • Education Level: A bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering is required.

  • Relevant Experience Level: 2+ years of relevant industry experience as a process or controls engineer.

  • Excellent communication, time management and interpersonal skills.
