This position conducts thorough, objective investigations and provides investigative research and support for the Department of Corrections (DOC), including investigating reported violations of state and agency anti-discrimination policies. Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct investigations into reported violations of the agency's policies so complaints are addressed and resolved at the earliest possible stage.

  • Conduct research and provide information and advice regarding agency employment and investigation practices, within the framework of employment law and state/agency policy.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state and agency policies; draft policy revisions as directed; maintain current knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to employment law and discrimination; and, as directed, review legislation and laws and recommend strategies for implementation.

To promote a culture of flexibility, we offer staff a hybrid work environment that varies by team, position, and business needs. This position will have the option to telework and will require regular travel to Minnesota Correctional Facilities (MCFs) to conduct investigative activities. Completion of a telework agreement will be required. Teleworking employees are required to live in Minnesota or a bordering state in a county along the Minnesota state line.

Minimum Qualifications

To be qualified for and considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below. Ensure that your resume contains descriptions of your work experiences sufficient for comparison against the requirements stated below and indicate the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

  • Three (3) years of experience conducting investigations within a legal, civil rights, law enforcement, corrections, human resources or labor relations setting. ( *An Associates degree in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Law, Public Administration, Public Policy, Sociology, or related field may substitute for six (6) months of experience, a Bachelor’s degree in a field above may substitute for one (1) year of experience, a JD or Master’s degree in a field above may substitute for 18 months of experience. ) Experience must include all of the following:

  • Demonstrated use of investigative interview techniques sufficient to collect information from witnesses and third-party sources;

  • Preparing complex investigative reports; and

  • Identifying and gathering evidence from multiple sources.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with internal and external customers by writing, preparing, and editing reports, letters, and other documents, while using correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence construction.

  • Demonstrated exceptional attention to detail and effective interpersonal skills in dealing with others, often in demanding situations and under critical time constraints.

  • Proven analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills sufficient to manage multiple issues at once while evaluating the information provided and determining an appropriate course of action.

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office products, especially Word and Excel, and strong keyboarding skills.

  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in criminal justice, public policy, public administration, or a humanities-related field.

  • Juris Doctorate.

  • Experience conducting investigations into alleged employee misconduct.

  • Experience conducting investigations into alleged sexual harassment or protected class discrimination/harassment.

  • Experience conducting investigations in law enforcement or correctional settings.

  • Formal training in investigative interview methods.

  • One or more years experience in labor relations or human resources performance management.

Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.

New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
