This position serves our partners at Minnesota’s largest state agency, the Department of Human Services (DHS). The MNIT DHS team supports complex and varied technical needs, including systems that provide health care coverage, deliver child protection and welfare services, and provide support for Minnesotans with special needs including mental illness, chemical dependencies, and physical or developmental disabilities.
As a Database Administrator (DBA), you are a technical specialist performing a broad range of system software programming, global system administration and DBA duties which include, but are not limited to evaluation, recommendation, planning, installing, testing, and maintaining the system software and hardware necessary to support different database environments (e.g., Oracle, SQL, etc.).
Specifically, you will:
Provide database administration for large IT systems with the Department of Human Services that encompasses several major business processes: eligibility, assessment, enrollment, case management, and reports.
Work with application developers and application managers on the use of different database platforms on-premises and/or in the Cloud.
Provide advanced-level database administration, and you will research, learn, adapt, and assist other team members with database administration as it is applied in the agency.
Work closely with other database administrators, application administrators, and developers to support the advancement and management of databases and applications in mission critical, real-time, 24 X 7 system environments.
Note: This position provides 24 X 7 support for major social service systems, requiring on-call duties as well as overtime as directed by the supervisor and business need.

This position requires a minimum of four (4) years of years of experience as a Database Administrator providing professional technical expertise with Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server technologies.
Experience must also include:
Extensive experience performing Oracle database installation, configuration, patching, backup, recovery, and upgrades.
Experience implementing and managing Oracle Performance Tuning tools, Oracle RAC (Real Application Clusters) and Data Guard.
Advanced knowledge of PL/SQL programming for database customizations and scripting.
Experience and knowledge background in managing Oracle databases on Linux/Unix platforms.
Experience and knowledge of database security best practices and experience ensuring compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding amongst all parties.
Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.
A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced experience in managing and maintaining relational database systems, such as Oracle, SQL Server, and other database technologies, both on-premises and in the cloud, with expertise in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and optimization for mission-critical applications.
Proficient in configuring, monitoring, and maintaining database security, including setting up roles, permissions, audits, and implementing encryption techniques for database-level security (both at rest and in transit).
Skilled in designing and implementing high-availability setups, such as clustering, replication, and failover techniques, as well as planning and executing disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure minimal downtime and data integrity.
Hands-on experience with cloud database platforms like AWS RDS, Microsoft Azure SQL Database, and Google Cloud SQL, including migration, replication, and backup strategies within cloud environments.
Hands-on experience deploying, managing, and optimizing Oracle databases on Microsoft Azure infrastructure.
