Position Announcement

Under the leadership and direction of the HPC Marketing & Building Operations Manager, this position coordinates all activities in the climbing wall area, as well as nightly operations for the Human Performance Center and Student Activity Center. This person is responsible for the training and supervision of climbing wall staff and acting as the HPC management during the evening hours. Ensures the climbing patrons get the best possible experience when using the climbing wall and other HPC facilities.

Performs daily facility operational responsibilities that include supervise and set-up/teardown of informal events; complete facility walkthroughs including head counts; manage, setup, teardown and supervise reservations and events; maintain a safe and enjoyable facility environment; and other duties as assigned. Responsibilities

Climbing Wall:

  • Coordinate with various stake holders to ensure the success of the climbing wall and other events that are called upon by HPC Marketing & Building Operations Manager and HPC Assistant Manager & Aquatic Operations. This includes general student climbing, academics, campus recreation and rentals.

  • Responsible for hiring, supervision, training, scheduling, and evaluating climbing wall staff.

  • Design and implement marketing programs to enhance revenues for the climbing wall.

  • Assist in recruiting, rentals, and events for the HPC climbing wall.

  • Maintain proficiency in the Connect 2, Fusion software for the climbing wall. Ensure all staff are appropriately trained on use of software.

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all climbing wall equipment and operational supplies, and report equipment needs to supervisor.

  • Ability to coordinate with Campus Recreation Outdoor Adventures to teach climbing clinics This could include intro to climbing/climbing wall orientation, climbing conditioning, movement & technique, learn to belay, climbing wall fitness, fundamentals to climbing, intro to speed climbing, bouldering clinics, and any other clinics we can offer to UT students, and enforce climbing wall guidelines and procedures to patrons.

  • Set routes on the climbing wall and have set schedule of when route setting will occur with minimal disruption to patron usage.

  • Conduct Inspections of equipment and climbing wall and teach P/T staff how to conduct safety inspections on auto belay, ropes, holds, and climbing equipment. This includes keeping an accurate log for daily, monthly, bi-annual, and annual inspections.

  • Share inspection and safety reports with risk management when called upon to do so.

  • Manage the operations of the climbing wall. Responsible for oversight of day-to-day business operations, inventory management, facility upkeep, and customer service.

  • Develop onboarding and training for staff each semester and throughout the year.

  • Hold monthly trainings and staff meetings with part-time staff.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Night Operations:

  • As part of the HPC management team, responsible for nightly operations for the HPC and SAC.

  • Coordinate with Event management within the HPC, SAC and Climbing wall areas for evening activities and operations. This may include event set-up, event bookings, staffing needs, marketing, event assessment, and reconciliation. Ensures events are efficient, effective, promoted, and collaborative at the highest professional quality possible.

  • Be cross-trained in HPC and SAC operations and pool operations to provide additional coverage when needed.

  • Perform basic facility assessments, pre-planning, and readiness. May include but is not limited to venue set-ups, chairs, AV, media, staging, house/ushering management, carpet or blue flooring, threat/hazard analysis for safety of employees and patrons, venue equipment maintenance, event take down, reconciliation, etc.

  • Act as supervisor for P/T employees for HPC and SAC, which may include front desk staff, facility supervisors, lifeguards and climbing wall staff.

  • Attend HPC Department Meetings, Facility Management and University meetings.

  • Maintain strong knowledge of climbing wall and HPC and SAC guidelines and procedures.

  • Assist HPC Manager with planning and administering an annual budget and monthly goals. Define goals/targets for activities and the achievement for the space objectives, and utilize feedback for future events.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field (Outdoor Adventures, Climbing Wall Operations, Exercise Science, Recreation Management, or Sports Management, etc.) required.

  • At least two (2) years’ climbing wall operation work experience, as well as knowledge of climbing belay techniques, movements in climbing, speed climbing, lead climbing and route setting required.

  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) and Single Pitch Instructor (SPI), CPR and First Aid Certifications.

  • Ability to get Working from Height & Route Setting certifications during first year of employment.

  • Must be able to work a 10am-7pm or 11am-8pm Monday - Thursday, and 9am - 6 pm Friday schedule (with Fridays dedicated for route setting). Some weekend work will be required depending on events.

  • Experience in developing events and marketing climbing wall to students, staff, and faculty, as well as a rental option for community preferred.

  • Good computer and business skills.

  • Ability to effectively manage staff of part-time student employees, with proficiency in team building concepts, supervision, training, evaluating, fiscal management, and assessment planning.

  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills (both written and verbal) when working with students, faculty and staff, and community through events or rentals.

  • Must be highly organized and capable of coordinating and multi-tasking ongoing projects, tasks, and stakeholders. Ability to handle stressful situations.

  • Ability to work well with various stakeholders both internal to the campus and external, with strong customer service skills.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time overtime-exempt staff position. Annual salary of $50,000-$54,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Desired start date of October/November 2024.
