Description

Provides reference and instruction services to the university community. Manages the library’s federal and state government depository library collections. Recommends additions to the library collection through collection development and assists with general collection management and classification. Participates in staff meetings and planning for the overall library and makes recommendations to the library director. Participate in professional development. By definition in the Faculty Status and Welfare Handbook, librarians are faculty members at the university.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions: (indicate percentage of time in right column – total time must add to 100%)

Provides professional reference service to the university, offering a wide range of technical and intellectual assistance and instruction in the use of reference materials, including in-depth research for faculty. 30%

Partners with teaching faculty on matters of curriculum support through collection development and library instruction. 5%

Assists teaching faculty with the development of research assignments within their course objectives. 3%

Prepare and update Library Guides for government information and other subjects and classes. 5%

Collection development and maintenance: Selects new materials for addition to the library's general collection and identifies items for de-selection as necessary.10%

Develops instructional materials related to library and research needs.3%

Manages all aspects of the Government Documents collection, including selection of student assistants, and serves as the liaison with the Federal and New York State Depository Library Programs.20%

Assists with general collection management and classification. 10%

Administrative duties including reference meetings, project planning, etc. 5%

Professional development5%

Plan and execute monthly window displays for the main lobby. 2%

Assists with oversight of the Circulation Desk and its student workers.2%

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: (indicate required or preferred)

A Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program is required. Ability to pass a criminal background check.

Years of Experience – (required or preferred number of years and in which specific areas)

1-3 years of library experience required, which includes a broad base of technical knowledge and skills related to college library reference and serials service, including strong skills in the use of computerized reference systems.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to our academic programs of distinction serving undergraduate and graduate students by providing notable library services and learning resources to support learning, instruction, and the pursuit of academic achievement.

  • Has a thorough grounding in traditional library services, demonstrated teaching skills necessary to create and deliver a wide- range of information literacy instruction sessions, as well as experience in the application of digital and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning.

  • Provide reference and retrieval services for students, faculty, and other researchers. Educates faculty and students in the use of primary research material through in-class presentations to illustrate materials available for public use, develops pride in the University through an understanding of its history and changing role and explains the purpose and function of the University Archives.

  • Establish and maintain effective communication & and working relationships with internal and external constituents.

  • Has advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Specifically, Word, Excel, and Outlook) and library-specific applications. Self-motivated to stay current with emerging software technologies.

  • Proven effectiveness in dealing with a wide range of professionals, staff, and administrators.

  • Maintain a program of personal and professional development appropriate for areas of responsibility.

  • Carry out all responsibilities and objectives in a professional manner.

  • Maintain professionalism when dealing with all staff and other customers while fostering positive working relationships.

  • Accept and render constructive criticism in a professional manner.
