Position Scope

As a Project Manager, you understand industrial processes, engineering, procurement, and plant construction. You have experience working for an EPC firm or a Technology Licensor as a Project Manager or Project Engineer developing FEP studies and /or Process Design Packages for projects in oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical or the pulp and paper process industry. You are responsible for delivery of project documents and additional objectives as defined by your management chain. You will be required to support the Front-End Engineering work for commercial projects and the full engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning cycle for smaller projects at Carbon Engineering’s (CE’s) Innovation Center. You will work with CE’s internal engineering department, technology development group, as well as with external engineering partners. You must be comfortable in an environment where you will be required to work independently or with a team of engineers and chemists towards multiple deadlines with minimum supervision. Working from the office, home, and traveling to engage with customers, partners, and oversee their work is expected.

This position requires the candidate to be onsite at our Innovation Centre based in Squamish, BC at least two days per week. There is flexibility to WFH three days per week based on business needs. CE offers a flexible work schedule to promote a work-life balance.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with internal and external engineering teams to develop FEP-1, FEP-2 (Pre-FEED) and Process Design Packages for commercial projects, as well as smaller projects for CE’s Innovation Center and Pilot Plant.

  • Interact with internal clients on technical aspects related to CE’s technologies, such as Capex and Opex data, area requirements, utilities, quantities and specifications, site selection criteria, etc.

  • Communicate with internal and external project stakeholders across all organization levels.

  • Balance project deliverables and competing priorities.

  • Identify and mitigate project risk.

  • Interface with the in-house Operations, Engineering, and Technology Department teams, as well as external engineering partners.

  • Support projects through Pre-FEED to completion phases by:

  • Completing/reviewing process engineering deliverables such as Process Simulations, Heat and Material Balances, PFDs, P&IDs, hydraulic sizing calculations, Line lists, and Equipment Specs/Datasheets.

  • Participating in 3D model reviews, design reviews (internal and external), HAZIDs/HAZOPs, PDRI Reviews, and weekly/monthly project progress meeting.

  • Ability to be detail oriented or high level, depending on what the situation requires.

  • Be a point of contact for internal and external engineering teams, with the ability to solicit feedback and quickly resolve issues.

  • Have an interest and experience in development of new technologies and products.

  • Analyze/model various process designs to optimize the process.

  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills with the ability to present technical information, concepts, or study results to project stakeholders.

  • Abide by the standards and policies of Carbon Engineering and the projects you are assigned.

  • Foster and maintain a positive culture within the team; a questioning mindset and recognize failure as a learning opportunity.

    Qualifications and Experience

Education:

  • BSc in Chemical Engineering, is desired.

    Experience:

  • P.Eng registered in BC or eligible to register with EGBC. Ability to stamp/certify engineering documents is required.

  • 6 to 10 years of experience in process engineering, project engineering, chemical plant projects, or chemical plant operation.

    Key Competencies:

  • Expertise in preparing cost estimates, planning, scheduling, and construction of industrial plants starting from front end engineering design and progressing through detailed design, construction, and commissioning.

  • Familiarity with the FEP processes and their deliverables, AACE Cost Estimation, CII guidelines and best practices, including PDRI reviews.

  • PMI certification is a plus.

  • Experience developing typical process engineering deliverables (Process Models, Heat and Material Balances, PFDs, P&IDs, Process control philosophy, Equipment Datasheets, etc.).

  • Experience in dealing with chemical processes, understanding of specific consumptions of raw materials and utilities, as well as variable, fixed and levelized costs.

  • Familiarity with Aspen Plus (HYSYS or similar simulation tools).

  • Programming skills, especially in Python, is a plus.

  • Familiarity with Primavera or MS Projects and Project Controls in general.

  • Understanding of core engineering principles (thermodynamics, heat & mass transfer, fluid dynamics, etc.).

  • Experience with CO2 capture technologies, or experience in a start-up or pilot plant environment a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Ability to distill complex problems into simple solutions.

  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently towards multiple deadlines with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to thrive on doing things that have not been done before (explorer mindset) and tackling challenging problems.

  • Willingness to travel for customer and partner engagements.

  • Ability to relocate to the sites of commercial projects is a plus.

    Offers and Benefits

Carbon Engineering offers a competitive compensation package including extended health benefits. Base Salary for an Intermediate level role is $93,330 to $141,000 with additional bonus pay.
