Safety: (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t over reach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.

Purpose of Position: Perform maintenance/repair various pieces of heavy equipment and vehicles including (not limited

to): forklifts, pickups, log handling machines (936 up to 988 Loaders, and shovel), welders, pressure washers, dump

trucks and log trucks, shop plant equipment and manlifts.

Essential Functions: These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job

  • Diagnoses, services and repairs various systems that are found on such equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, high voltage generators, propane powered equipment, and pneumatic systems.

  • Troubleshoots malfunctions in the equipment and repair.

  • Performs routine maintenance checks and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changes filters and oil, and lubricates vehicles and motor driven equipment.

  • Communicate with operators to identify and repair problems with vehicles/equipment.

  • Maintain regular service intervals for all vehicles/equipment and document actions in maintenance records.

  • Troubleshoot malfunctions and implement repair actions.

  • Coordinate with outside agencies for assistance with repairs beyond internal capabilities.

  • Maintain adequate levels of supplies to optimize in service time for all vehicles/equipment

  • Inspect, repair and adjust diesel powered vehicles/equipment

  • Perform incidental welding operations on equipment.

  • Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.

  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

  • Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts using welders, torch sets, plasma cutter, and metal cutting saws.

  • Order and maintain appropriate supplies and stock.

  • Attend and/or provide monthly safety training topics

  • Assist in training staff in mechanical repair techniques.

  • Road test vehicles.

  • Make field repairs.

    Non Essential Functions: These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.

    Working Environment: (1) Inside 60%, average temperature 80 degrees, extreme low temperature 10 degrees F, extreme high temperature 120 degrees F. (2) Outside 40%. Noise or vibration: Machine noise to include machine being operated as well as other machines close by including Forklifts. Hazards: See Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Dust: Limited, Mist: Water, Odors: Dry wood, Gasses: None, Poor Ventilation: None. The worker in this position will be standing on a slightly elevated wooden platform with rubber mats. The worker will move back and forth on this platform in front of an elevated dry conveyor measuring 3 ½ to 4’ above the ground.

    Physical/Mental Demands: See the attached Job/Task Evaluation and Physical Capabilities portion; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 50 lbs.

    Skills: Must have some experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Must have the KSA to apply Machine Specific Lockout Procedures, lead monthly safety training topics, and certify employee competencies, when applicable. Must be able to communicate with rolling stock operators and all levels of management (verbally), face-to-face, via radio, and telephone as well as in writing. Must have 10 years of experience as a mechanic specifically for heavy equipment to include: hydraulic and air welding, rebuilding cylinders; troubleshooting,

    Must have excellent hand eye coordination. Use vision/hearing continuously. Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout procedures, monthly safety training, etc. Worker generally works alone with little supervision. Operators must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task. Ability to prioritize, organize and make necessary decisions.

    Must know all facets of heavy equipment repairs including repair of hydraulic, electrical, gas, diesel, and propane systems.

    Personal Expenses: Skilled craftsman are required to provide their own set of tools. The company will provide a tool allowance.
