General Function

The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.

Description of Primary Duties

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Missouri State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. Start date is August, 2025.

The standard teaching load for research-active faculty is three classes per semester. Our faculty teaches undergraduate and graduate courses across in-person, online, and hybrid modalities.

Scholarly activity and publication, along with teaching and service, are required for tenure and promotion.

Missouri State University offers a research-supportive environment that includes opportunities to apply for summer fellowships and faculty research grants.

Missouri State University is located in Springfield, the principal city of an expanding metropolitan area with nearly a half million residents. Springfield sits on a plateau overlooking the majestic Ozark Mountain region, just 40 miles north of Branson, MO. The Springfield area has a cost of living significantly below the national average and provides abundant opportunities for entertainment and outdoor recreation. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice has approximately 350 undergraduate and 50 graduate students.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Additional Qualifications

A PhD in Criminology/Criminal Justice is required. ABD candidates realistically scheduled to complete the dissertation by the time of appointment will be considered.

ABD applicants should include a detailed update on their dissertation progress.
