GENERAL PURPOSE

Working under the supervision of the Catalog Librarian, this position performs general, routine duties in the delivery of public library services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs general duties related to the circulation of library materials, including but not limited to:

  • Sorts, shelves, and arranges library materials;
  • Maintains shelves by shelving, facing, reading, checking for damaged materials, and shifting materials;
  • Assists with setting up and maintaining displays;
  • Uses reports to assist with pulling holds and weeding materials;
  • Clears tables, chairs, and other surfaces of library materials and returns them to their proper location;
  • May assist patrons in locating materials;
  • May assist Clerks and Librarians with other library tasks;
  • Performs a variety of general office duties; operates computer for word and information processing;
  • Performs related duties as required;

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or equivalent is preferred; must be at least 18 years old or older
  • Ability to sort and arrange accurately and efficiently in alphabetical and categorical order;
  • Must have an aptitude for detail and neatness;
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work both as a team and independently in carrying out work assignments;
  • Available to work one evening a week and one Saturday per month;
  • Knowledge of library methods, practices, and procedures, including the Dewey Decimal system;
  • Must meet attendance and punctuality requirements
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and patrons of all ages;
  • Must abide by all City policies and procedures.
  • Operate various computers, office machines, and equipment;
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Performs duties that may include physical effort, such as pushing or pulling a loaded book truck, lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, and walking.
  • Occasionally may lift/carry materials up to 40 pounds.
  • May sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time.
