What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role, as Executive Director, Functional Genomics, you will lead Amgen’s Functional Genomics group. We are seeking an accomplished Executive Director to lead our efforts in target discovery and characterization through functional genomics, including cutting edge genome manipulation tools, phenotypic screening, and multi-omics.

In this position you will lead a research team in the Research Technologies department focused on target discovery and biology, elucidating mechanism of action for therapeutics, phenotypic screening, biomarker discovery, and understanding resistance mechanisms. As a skilled organizational leader, this individual should be an efficient manager, a strong team builder and a collaborator who will provide robust organizational and scientific leadership consistent with Amgen’s culture of innovation and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a group that will deliver critical, decision-making data regarding target discovery and biology to our pipeline through functional genomics, including CRISPR screening and advanced transcriptomics methods

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the research strategy to integrate functional genomics and human genetics to understand target biology and de novo target discovery

  • Implement new gene editing technologies to stay at the cutting edge of functional genomics for target discovery and advancing our pipeline

  • Develop effective cross functional relationships with colleagues in therapeutic areas, including Oncology, Inflammation, and Cardiometabolic, Small and Large Molecule Discovery, and our human genetics group at deCODE genetics

  • Become a leader within the Research Technologies department focused on progressing our small and large molecule pipeline from pre-discovery to IND through cutting-edge, innovative, technology-focused science

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of technology experience OR

  • Master’s degree & 10 years of technology experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of technology experience AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, and directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A proven track record of scientific innovation and accomplishment in functional genomics, as demonstrated by a strong publication record, patent submissions, and presentations at leading conferences

  • A deep understanding of CRISPR screening, gene editing technology, and transcriptomics approaches, including single cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics

  • Demonstrated experience in phenotypic screening, both pooled and arrayed, using compounds and gene editing with whole genome and targeted libraries

  • Ability to advance functional genomics capabilities through technology development to stay at the cutting edge of this rapidly changing field

  • Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience in leading, mentoring and developing the careers of a diverse and talented team

  • An ability to build strong and productive relationships with peers and cross functional partners

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $271,118-$322,291.

If based in San Francisco, CA, the base salary range for this opportunity is $285,279 - $344,825.
