Job Summary

  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on campus buildings, facilities, equipment or machinery.
  • Assembles, installs and/or repairs: wiring, electrical and electronic components, plumbing/pipe systems, physical structures, fixtures, paint, HVAC systems, locks/access systems, compressors, generators, engines, etc.
  • Diagnoses problems and determines corrective solutions, referring to and/or adhering to building codes, blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  • Repairs or replaces defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools, and reassembles equipment.
  • May lead other maintenance staff on projects or assist in a general maintenance capacity when others are in a lead role.
  • Maintains parts, supplies, and equipment advising supervisor when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance duties.
  • Drives University vehicles as needed.
  • Works any shift as needed.
  • Provides 24-hour a day emergency response as needed.
  • Assists with snow removal activities as necessary.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 5 years of verifiable journey-level experience;
  • ORCertificate in DOL apprenticed trade (electrical/plumbing/HVAC/carpentry)

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations of time. It requires effective communication and the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, to position one's self in low level positions, and detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections.

The person is this role must be available to work during inclement weather (i.e. snow and ice) when weather emergencies dictate that the department is needed to take care of the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
