Work Schedule: 8:30 -4:30 M-F, Weekends and holidays with scheduled programs

Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Salary: $40,530

Main office: Ferrettie/Baugo Creek County Park but would be expected to work programs at all the St. Joseph County parks.

Incumbent serves as Leisure Services Supervisor for St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for planning and providing quality leisure programs for the County parks.

DUTIES:

Develops, coordinates, plans, schedules, implements, and works as hands-on supervisor for Leisure Services programs and activities, including disc golf, canoeing, geocaching, orienteering, kayaking, fishing, inner tubing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hayrides, arts and crafts, archery, and special events.

Supervises part-time and seasonal staff, including interviewing job candidates, making hiring decisions, orienting new subordinates, planning, delegating, scheduling work assignments, establishing specific work goals, evaluating performance results, keeping supervisor and assigned staff informed of organizational developments, and maintaining discipline and recommending corrective action. Assists with supervising part-time and seasonal staff after hours and on weekends.

Coordinates, assists, and tracks park volunteer hours during park related activities and programs.

Assists with marketing and publicity of park activities, including news releases, creating flyers, and promoting programs and events through local media and social networks.

Serves as liaison to individuals and outside groups for the coordination of special events and programs at County parks, including responding to inquiries, contacting outside partnered groups, and communicating with and assisting other Parks Department staff with special events and programs as needed.

Prepares written evaluations of Leisure Services programs and activities, including budgeting and tracking materials, personnel and attendance records, maintaining required paperwork and monetary deposits, assessing programs, and preparing written reports.

Monitors inventory and orders program supplies and equipment as needed.

Operates utility vehicle, 15-passenger van with trailer, snowmobile, tractor, and various equipment and tools in the performance of duties.

Testifies in legal proceedings or court as necessary.

Attends various training and conferences as necessary.

Performs duties of other Leisure Services staff members in their absence or as needed.

Responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Proven experience (1-3 years) working with the public organizing and running programs. Knowledge of outdoor program design, scheduling, and inventory of equipment.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer service-oriented approach.

Attention to detail and discretion when handling confidential information.

Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and other relevant software applications.?

I.?JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Baccalaureate Degree in Parks and Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Recreati n Management, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Education, Elementary Education, or related field. Equivalent job experience will also be considered.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.

Thorough knowledge of accepted practices and principles relating to Leisure Services and outdoor education and recreation, with ability to plan, promote, and implement programs to meet the recreational and educational needs of various members and groups in the community.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and ability to prepare various reports and promotional materials.

Ability to properly operate utility vehicle, 15-passenger van with trailer, snowmobile, tractor, and various equipment and tools in the performance of duties.

Ability to properly operate various office equipment, including computer, calculator, copier, fax machine, cash register, and telephone.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Park Board members, community groups, news media, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to effectively supervise assigned personnel, including interviewing job candidates, making hiring decisions, orienting new subordinates, planning, delegating, and scheduling work assignments, establishing specific work goals, evaluating performance results, keeping supervisor and assigned staff informed of organizational developments, and maintaining discipline and recommending corrective action.
