UPMC Casual Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Acute Care in Somerset, Pennsylvania

UPMC Somerset is looking for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to join our Acute Care units! If you are searching for a fast-paced, exciting career that allows you to experience a variety of different fields, Acute Care could be for you!

Our Acute Care is comprised of the Cardiology Medicine Unit & Surgical Acute Care unit. As a Casual RN, you can expect to work 12-hour shifts and be scheduled on an as-needed basis to support the 24/7 operations of the units. The Acute Care units are truly a team! As part of this team, you will be cross trained to function on both units and will float when needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Report equipment malfunctions promptly to the appropriate department.

  • Establish effective communication strategies and maintain professional, respectful relationships.

  • Participate in healthcare conferences and universal unit activities, such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

  • Assist the RN and interdisciplinary team in evaluating, planning, and implementing patient care plans.

  • Provide direct patient care, including administering injections, taking vital signs, performing basic diagnostic tests, observing patients, dressing wounds, and administering medications.

  • Follow established medication use policies and accurately observe and record patient symptoms, conditions, and reactions to treatments.

  • Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding hospital stay and home care concerns.

  • Instruct and demonstrate patient care practices as needed.

  • Discuss patient or family concerns with the RN in charge for appropriate resolution.

  • Adhere to patient care, hospital information, and safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions and maintaining CPR certification.

  • Completion of a Practical Nursing Program approved by the State Board of Nursing.

  • One year general medical/surgical experience in an acute care setting preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Basic Arrhythmia Course upon hire or within 6 months required

  • National Institute of Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)

  • Act 34
