Monitoring and Diagnostics Engineer

Status: Exempt (Salaried)

Department: HG&S Sustaining Engineering

Location: Can be based out of our Slingerlands, NY, Concord, MA or Netherlands offices

Position Summary

As a Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineer, you will lead the technical implementation of the diagnostic strategy for Plug Power's global services team. In this role you will collaborate with stakeholders in product engineering, service, IT, and other functions to develop automation and communication systems for distributed assets and SCADA capabilities for our technical support operations. You will analyze operational data to develop and continually improve the monitoring and alerting capabilities for fielded products. In addition, this role supports the development of severity thresholds and response procedures for diagnostic alarms, assuring high operational availability of products and systems. The successful candidate for this position will be a motivated self-starter with a collaborative mindset and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide functional ownership of Plug Power's SCADA system.
  • Establish diagnostic indicators of system performance for monitoring and trending.
  • Develop prognostic indicators of product failure modes and causes capable of detecting and preventing product failure events.
  • Work with engineering to ensure adequate sensing and data are available to enable product monitoring required to maintain operational availability.
  • Design, develop, verify, and test PLC program and SCADA HMI screens, trends, and alerts.
  • Develop SCADA user interface for technical services and engineering use.
  • Work with the cross-functional team of product engineering, IT, and others to optimize our data architecture from fielded systems to the technical support monitoring screens, assuring high operational availability of the SCADA network and system.
  • Manage the product alerting process including establishing alert thresholds, notification protocols, and supporting the development of disposition procedures.
  • Support product development initiatives to enable real-time 7x24 product monitoring of both stationary and mobile assets.
  • Develop procedures for testing and commissioning new installations added to the SCADA platform.
  • Assist with initial start-up and commissioning of new SCADA installations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data communication, alerting and SCADA system issues.
  • Stay abreast of emerging SCADA technologies and lead the evaluation and testing of proposed design solutions and upgrades.
  • Develop SCADA system performance indicators, analyze system performance and implement improvements to achieve targeted performance.
  • Extract data from SCADA historian to analyze product performance, support root cause investigations and corrective actions, and develop improved monitoring capabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • B.S. in engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Experience using SCADA systems from Schneider Electric, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.
  • Experience with one or more of the following PLC platforms: Allen Bradley, Modicon, GE Fanuc, Siemens.
  • Experience with embedded control languages, e.g., C++, a plus
  • Experience in third-party integration devices connected through Modbus, Ethernet IP, CAN, and other communication protocols.
  • Familiarity with networking systems and protocols - VPN, TCP/IP, Cisco, etc.
  • Mechanical and electrical system aptitude to understand system operations, failure modes and causes
  • Ability to troubleshoot system failures, determine root cause and implement corrective actions.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical interconnect drawings and mechanical P&ID drawings.
  • Experience with scripting languages, e.g., SQL, Python, etc. a plus.
