The Department of Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy has an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated Research Scientist/Engineer I who will be involved in research, focusing on modeling human organ function through molecular profiling and immunostaining of engineered cell systems. Operating at Biosafety Level 2, the role involves hands-on work with human kidney tissue, primary cell preparation, and bioengineered hardware assembly. With a strong emphasis on hazardous chemical handling, the research aims to simulate tissue injury and advance drug development. The position offers an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge science, combining expertise in molecular biology, bioengineering, and specialized lab techniques.

The purpose of the research is to model human organ function as determined by molecular profiling of gene expression, immunostaining of engineered cell systems and working with hazardous chemicals/xenobiotics associated with tissue injury.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES RESEARCH - 95%

  • Conducts BSL2 level research on human specimens; specific duties will include working with clinical research coordinators to procure human kidney tissue, process tissue, prepare, propagate, and preserve primary cells from human tissue.

  • Uses primary kidney cells to populate bioengineered hardware to model human organ function as determined by molecular profiling of gene expression, immunostaining of engineered cell systems and working with hazardous chemicals/xenobiotics associated with tissue injury.

  • Collects and organize electronic copies of laboratory protocols, SOPs, chemical inventories, and lab personnel assigned duties.

  • Reviews scientific journals, abstracts and other literature concerning experimental procedures and conferring with Principal Investigators concerning implementation of experimental procedures.ADMINISTRATION - 5%

  • Attends lab meetings and research seminars as relevant to laboratory activities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and one year of experience working with primary human kidney and intestinal cells. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience with Immunocytochemistry/histochemistry assay development.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
