The Collaborative Health Studies Coordinating Center (CHSCC) in the Department of Biostatistics has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary , part time 30%FTE, fixed duration Research Study Assistant (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv) (working title: Medical Records Abstractor). This position is anticipated to last approximately 9 months.

The Medical Records Abstractor will review medical records, record key data points of interest, and help organize records for subsequent expert review in support of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA; an NHLBI-funded study of cardiovascular disease that started in 2000). We seek someone who is able to work in a team environment, has excellent time management skills, pays attention to detail, and is able to effectively communicate with members of the team. This research position is key to the success of the MESA study, a multi-cohort study in its 24th year of operation that has contributed over 2,300 scientific publications to date.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work under the supervision of an experienced team member to obtain, abstract, and code complex clinical information from multiple sources (medical records, research records, etc.) for research subjects. Code and record said information into various study-specific data-capture systems (both electronic and paper-based) [75%].

  • Prepare medical records for subsequent adjudication by physician reviewers [10%].

  • Resolve and answer data queries with minimal errors [5%].

  • Create and maintain study participant charts [5%].

  • Understand research study flow, work with field center staff and research team members [5%]. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience.OR

  • Equivalent education/experience. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Communications, Medical Records, English, or other related medical/science degree.

  • Experience with medical records, medical terminology, HIPAA.

  • Experience with cardiovascular disease research.

  • Experience in support of cardiac clinical care.
