The Department of Recreation has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Custodian 1 (NE S WFSE Campuswide) to join their team. SUMMARY:

Will perform a variety of maintenance and custodial tasks to maintain clean, sanitary and safe conditions in and around UW Recreation facilities. Will work under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Facilities. The work schedule may be rotating or variable and include weekends. The typical schedule is Monday - Friday, 1:30 pm-10:00 pm.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following represents a variety of the responsibilities assigned to the person in this position. The examples represent typical work, but are not intended to be inclusive of all duties required for this position.

  • Clean and maintain floors, walls, mirrors, windows, carpets, furniture, display cases, vents; clean and sanitize restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures; empty trash containers; set-up and move furniture and sports equipment required for special events; replace toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other restroom supplies as needed.

  • Use power equipment and hand tools such as broom, mop, squeegee, floor machine and vacuum required for the cleaning and custodial maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture; use ladders when required in work assignments.

  • Assist Recreation maintenance staff in completing small equipment repairs and facility projects.

  • Maintain maintenance and safety inspection logs, using Recreation’s online software system. Utilize department computers/cell phone for online training, reporting facility issues, and relaying information.

  • May manually or with self-propelled equipment remove snow or debris from sidewalks, stairs, driveways, entry ways; assist in maintaining building grounds and outdoor areas. Equipment that may be used include blower, power washer, lawn mower, gas trimmer and ball washer.

  • Assist Recreation maintenance staff with the maintenance of the sports fields to include field inspections, hand mowing, irrigation, weed removal, filling holes, and field preparation; empty trash and recycling containers.

  • Assist Recreation maintenance staff with the maintenance of the tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and outdoor basketball court to include court inspections, power washing, raking, leaf blowing, weed removal, and court preparation; empty trash and recycling containers.

  • May operate motorized equipment: court sweeper, pick-up truck, or utility vehicle.

  • Read and follow instructions and labels regarding chemicals, cleaners, and supplies, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information and the proper use of personal protective equipment.

  • Lock and unlock buildings; secure the building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors, windows; report any unauthorized occupants.

  • Sweep, dry and wet mop, scrub and condition vinyl, terrazzo, ceramic tiles, hardwood and other floor surfaces. Vacuum and shampoo carpets and furniture.

  • Perform custodial maintenance of office areas, kitchenette, stairwells, pool, locker rooms, and various activity areas.

  • Provide maintenance custodial coverage when 1st shift is absent at the IMA Building and/or the Waterfront and Golf Range Buildings.

  • Work cooperatively with other members of the Recreation staff in the interest of providing a comprehensive program of recreation activities designed to meet the needs and interest of the University community.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions from the Assistant Director for Facilities.

  • Perform related duties as required, including weekly, monthly, or annual custodial projects. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical ability to do the required work; AND one year of experience in custodial or general maintenance work. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Obtain AED/CPR/First Aid certificate within six months of employment.

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.

  • 2nd shift: Monday - Friday, 1:30 pm - 10:00 pm.

  • Ability to work in an environment occupied by patrons and independently make critical decisions on workflow, while accomplishing daily scheduled tasks with flexibility and provide clear and concise communication with patrons or Operations staff.

  • Ability to communicate using basic English skills (reading, writing, and speaking).

  • Basic computer skills and the ability to use technology for email and online systems (i.e. Workday/MaintenanceCare/Teams/Training Modules).
