Job Summary

The Pacific Alliance of YMCAs serves its 31 member YMCAs by influencing public policy and connection to evidence-based solutions to demonstrate their collective impact to solve critical social issues in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The Washington State Alliance of YMCAs is comprised of 16 member YMCA Associations with a total of 51 branches. The purpose of the WA Alliance is to leverage the collective strength of Washington Ys to ensure relevant impact in our communities and throughout the state. The Executive Director manages the WA State Alliance’s day-to-day administrative operations. This includes establishing and directing strategic initiatives, coordinating peer-level professional development, advocating for Ys and public policies that benefit them, and overseeing the finances of the state alliance.

Collectively, these efforts will result in strengthening and advancing the position of the WA Alliance as a statewide/regional/national leader in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The Alliance will be a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the State, working to ensure increased accessibility for all to YMCA programs and services. This position will support the Pacific Alliance by providing direct services to member Y organizations throughout the region. Working with Y CEOs and their staff, this position will help Ys by strengthening and expanding peer networks, creating, and coordinating professional development opportunities, coordinating alliance events, liaising with the Service Delivery Hub, and leading state-specific projects as needed. The position reports to the Pacific Alliance of YMCAs’ CEO and works closely with the Alliance Board (Association CEOs), the Alliance Chair, the Public Policy Chair, contract lobbyists, and Y-USA staff to achieve WA State Alliance objectives. The Executive Director also supports the attainment of regional alliance goals.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Hours and days of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Days and hours may vary depending on the needs of the organization and community. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

Hiring Range: $110,000 - $125,000

Responsibilities

  • Formulates Washington Alliance Strategic Initiatives in conjunction with the Pacific Alliance CEO and WA Alliance Executive Committee.

  • Establishes, with Board input, an annual work plan with four to five primary objectives and strategies for achievement. Secures Alliance CEO and Board approval on the final plan.

  • Develops effective state and regional peer communities that link YMCA directors and administrative staff who perform similar duties. The objective is to share best practices while providing training and development opportunities.

  • Provides leadership for Alliance meetings, Alliance Public Policy and Advocacy events, and peer communities. This includes developing agendas with the WA Alliance Chair and committee chairs, engaging subject matter experts, and connecting appropriate people to participate.

  • Leads statewide efforts in program development and innovation.

  • Joins Alliance Board Members in negotiating third-party payer partnerships/programs.

  • Directs the work of Washington Ys in conjunction with Regional Alliance initiatives.

  • Leads assigned Regional Alliance initiatives.

Advocacy/Public Policy

  • Initiates annual process with the WA Public Policy chair to establish legislative goals.

  • Directly oversees the work of contract lobbyists to achieve Alliance Public Policy goals as established by the Board.

  • Coordinates legislative updates/progress reports with lobbyists to present to the Board.

  • Builds and maintains alliances and positive proactive professional relationships with state legislators, state agencies, grant makers, and other compatible partners and their staff members.

  • Works to position the Y with WA state leaders as the state’s “Go To” non-profit alliance for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility initiatives.

Fiscal Management

  • Ensures and sustains Alliance fiscal integrity and financial stability to maintain statewide efforts.

  • Develops specialized campaigns, creative revenue streams, and fundraising strategies; including securing grants to ensure adequate funding to achieve WA YMCA State Alliance priorities.

  • Develops and recommends an annual budget for Alliance approval and ensures prudent fiscal management, reporting, and controls. Manages to budget, particularly to foresee and avoid funding vulnerabilities or shortfalls.

  • Oversees all the Alliance’s financial operations; manages fiscal agent relationship.

Additional duties as determined by the Pacific Alliance CEO and Alliance Board may be added and this list is subject to change based upon the evaluation of Alliance needs.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree preferred or a minimum of 10 years of experience in human services, health promotion, public policy, communications, or related field.

  • YMCA Organizational Leader status preferred.

  • Experience: 3-5 years of nonprofit management expertise and/or public policy experience preferred.

  • Experience researching, writing, and securing grants and other funding.

  • Experience in building processes, procedures, systems, and practices to achieve transformational excellence.

  • Possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Must possess an appropriate balance between the strategic and tactical with the vision to establish a direction for the organization and a plan to get there.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills with an ability to balance assertiveness with diplomacy.

  • Proven experience in handling highly confidential and sensitive matters.

  • Demonstrated experience in fiscal management, budgeting, and analysis.

  • Ability to partner and provide strategic level input to senior leadership and the ability to influence others at all levels of the organization.

  • Competency in a variety of Windows-based programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, and MS Teams.

  • Demonstrate the values of the Y with a deep commitment to the mission of the YMCA, its members, and the communities served.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  1. Washington State residency is required.

  2. This job is 100% remote.

  3. Periodic statewide, regional, and national travel may be required, up to 40% of the work week.
