Siemens Energy HVDC Operator in Sayreville, New Jersey

A Snapshot of Your Day

The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring, controlling and coordinating the operation and reliability of the Neptune Regional Transmission System (NRTS) and the Hudson Transmission Project (HTP) HVDC system links in accordance with the PJM agreement and NERC Standards. The Neptune station provides up to 660 MW of power to Long Island electricity consumers – enough for 600,000 homes – and supplies more than 20% of Long Island’s typical electricity demand. The Hudson station provides increased reliability by providing an additional source of power for New York City. The incumbent will be required to follow all Siemens Safety Rules and procedures as the Operator, exercise proper judgment and have a broad knowledge of Bulk Electric System principles and practices. The primary responsibility is to monitor the status of the converter stations in accordance with the Common Operating Instructions; take real time actions including primary load shedding to ensure the stable and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System.

  • The ability to communicate effectively in English, written or verbal; exercise independent action, Judgment and risk management; act decisively; and interact effectively with PJM, NYISO, PSE&G, Con Ed, LIPA and First Energy.

  • Possess a basic technical knowledge of Electric Power Systems.

  • Bring to the position inquisitiveness, decisiveness, calm under pressure, positive attitude and teamwork.

  • Must attain PJM System Operator Certification within six months of hire and complete mandatory PJM

  • Yearly training requirements and Continuing Education Hours.

  • Must attain NERC Transmission Operator Certification within six months of hire and complete mandatory NERC yearly training requirements and Continuing Education Hours.

  • Must be available to respond for emergency and relief assignments including holidays.

  • Must foster an inclusive work environment and respect all aspects of diversity.

  • Preferred HVDC system experience, must posses a solid knowledge of electrical theory.

  • Complete understanding of computer systems and Microsoft 365 suite, including email.

  • Be an effective and reliable communicator.

What You Bring

Essential Job Functions:

  • Monitors power system equipment, ensuring proper operation within capability of equipment. Initiates corrective action, as required to achieve or maintain these limitations.

  • Updates and maintains records necessary for the daily and monthly reports. This includes being familiar with the maintenance management program (iMaint) and entering data as required into the system in the form updating work requests or work orders.

  • Be familiar with Human Machine Interface (HMI) computers and have the ability to trend and analyze data; assist in troubleshooting alarms that occur on the System Event Recorder.

  • Promote safety through training, inspections, meetings, and safety contact reports.

  • Document system performance and operating conditions by maintaining a complete and accurate daily log of events.

  • Must be able to work 12 hour rotating shifts.

  • Take direction from site leadership in regards to coordinating operations and maintenance activities.

  • Be available to respond to emergencies as defined in the Neptune RTS/HTP agreement.

  • Associate’s degree in an Engineering discipline preferred. NERC/PJM certification required within six months of hire.

  • Travel to Hicksville Long Island and Ridgefield NJ for Operations in Emergency Situations.

  • Attain PJM System Operator Certification within six months of hire.

  • Attain NERC Transmission Operator Certification within six months of hire.

  • Continuously monitor, control and coordinate and communicate system data from the HMI screens.

  • Work on a rotating Dupont schedule.

  • Work in a control room environment alone with phones, alarms and associated power plant monitoring.

  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
