Why does the job exist?

The position exists to assist with the management of production at Rock Lake State Fish Hatchery to provide fish for stocking in waters throughout the state. The position is paid to produce warm/cool water species and cold-water species of fish and to assist with the management of the Rock Lake Hatchery facility and personnel.

How does it get done?

Assisting with the development and implementation of an annual fish production plan for the warm/cool and cold-water sections of the facility. Evaluation of daily production inventories to assess fish health. Communicating with the Manager to ensure all tasks relative to fish production are completed. Participating in daily fish propagation activities. Communicating with the Manager to ensure all priority tasks are completed with the most efficient use of available manpower. Provide recommendations to the Manager where applicable.

This position is performed for the public. It's primary function is to provide sustainable use for a food supply and recreational opportunity.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience or education in animal health, fisheries science, fish culture, wildlife science, natural science, biology, agriculture, animal husbandry, carpentry, auto mechanics, plumbing, welding and working with complex water delivery systems.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science, Aquaculture, Animal Science or Wildlife Science, or other closely related field and one (1) year in farm or ranch related experience including basic construction, electrical, and plumbing skills, heavy and farm equipment operation/maintenance, fisheries and/or wildlife habitat management. Employment Requirements

Pre-employment background inves igation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License soon after candidate is hired, but NOT required when they apply. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Biologist will be required to survey wildlife from rotary (helicopter) or fixed-wing aircraft.

Working Conditions

Work will be in both outdoor and office settings. The amount of time spent working in each setting will vary depending on prioritization of tasks and deadlines. Lift up to 80 pounds to waist height, bend, climb 2,000 feet in elevation, navigate in inclement weather. Bending, standing, various chemical application, operate agricultural and heavy equipment including 20 various attachments, transport trucks, ATVs, UTVs, and a Department vehicle. Use hand tools, power tools, welders, cutting torches, plasma clutters, tire machines and pressure washers. Use computers with the latest Microsoft windows software. Work beyond normal work day hours, including overnight camping. Extended travel across New Mexico may be required during certain times of the year. Office work will include computer work such as: generating and completing reports, entering time, sending and receiving emails, and ordering various items as need
