SANILAC COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION Engineer in Sandusky, Michigan

ENGINEER JOB DESCRIPTION EMPLOYER: Sanilac County Road Commission FLSA: EXEMPT 100 S. Elk Street Sandusky, MI 48471 Supervisor: Managing Director POSITION SUMMARY: An at-will salaried position under the general supervision of the Managing Director, performing technical tasks such as inspection associated with road and bridge construction projects (including federal aid projects), utility permit issuance and oversight, collecting road material inventory with a laptop/GPS unit, and computer data entry for road material history. The applicant shall have a comprehensive knowledge of modern methods and techniques of design and construction for road and bridge work and a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local construction specifications. Minimum Qualifications: This position will include and not be limited to the following: • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree. • A current and valid Michigan Driver's License. • Responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on Construction .Plans for Road, Bridges, Culverts, Watermains, and Drains. • Responsible for completing and submitting permits: MDOT, MDEQ, Soil Erosion. • Oversee utility permit program, keep SCRC policies up to date. • Must have or obtain certificate of training for: Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control, and Storm Water Operator. • Candidates must possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Have the ability to effectively supervise contractors and courteously work with the public and other governmental agencies. • Must have organizational skills to maintain accurate daily records of multiple projects and computer software skills to keep a recorded road material history. • Perform traffic studies and warrant analyses. • Must be able to use a vehicle daily to perform duties, handle survey and other equipment to obtain field information, traverse varying terrain and perform duties in adverse weather. • Must have or obtain Paser Training, Paver Operations Training, Gravel Testing, Asphalt Testing and Office Tech training. Desirable Qualifications: • Design and field experience with road/bridge construction thru co-operative education, minimum 3 seasons. • Software knowledge: FieldBook/Field Manager, Roadsoft, Excel, WordPerfect, Civil 3d. • Survey knowledge. • MDOT Material Certifications. (Paver Operations, Gravel Testing, Asphalt Testing) • Knowledge of Traffic Counters, GPS units, LapTop Data Collecter; PASER rating system. Perform such duties under the direction of the Managing Director as necessary for the efficient operation of the Engineering Department and in the best interest of the Sanilac County Road Commission. WORKING CONDITIONS Employee is sometimes exposed to unpleasant weather conditions, dirt, dust, insects, as well as hazardous working conditions (working in traffic and on construction sites). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Duties require physical mobility to work outdoors as well as in a normal office setting, vision to complete duties including the ability to distinguish colors, shapes and sizes and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.
