General Description

SUNY Niagara has a vacancy for a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track English instructor position. This position is contained in the Division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching in a variety of settings, and for advising students throughout the academic year. Courses to teach will include all courses in our Composition sequence, and may also include Literature, Creative Writing, Journalism, and Developmental Writing. Courses are taught in-person and online. Assignments are typically during the day, but may also be during evening hours. These classes are held at SUNY Niagara’s main campus located in Sanborn, NY, but future assignments may include classes at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.

The start date of this position will be January 10, 2025, for the beginning of the Spring 2025 semester. The successful candidate will be required to work 162 days per academic year (August – May), and will be provided with a winter break from mid-December to early January, a Spring Break for one week in mid-March, and will work until the Spring semester ends in Mid-May. Faculty are not required to work in June, July, and most of August, but opportunities for teaching Summer classes exist.

In addition to the base salary, there is the potential for overload and other assignments, which would increase the base salary. There is also a pathway for promotion to higher level salary positions (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor).

Typical Work Activities

  • Teach and advise students

  • Actively participate as a member of committees, representing the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Division

  • Participate in student recruitment activities

  • Develop relations with Student Life, high schools, and the public education community

  • Apply for grants and solicit other resources

  • Develop and maintain transfer program articulation agreements

  • Maintain subject matter currency

  • Develop and revise the program’s curriculum

  • Use computer technology including classroom technology and the College’s learning management system

  • Assess course and program learning outcomes

  • Contribute meaningfully and regularly to departmental/divisional meetings, taskforces, and activities

  • Participate in college and discipline-specific professional activities

  • Cooperate with SUNY 4-year institutions as it pertains to curriculum coordination as well as student transfers

  • Complete other duties as assigned by the AVP of Academic Affairs

    Essential Functions

Ability to navigate relationships with diverse populations and teach a diverse student population. Ability to advise students for classes, transfer options, and career advice in their field. Ability to be an active member in the division and serve on committees representing the division. Ability to speak in front of groups of people. Must be able to effectively communicate with students, colleagues, supervisors and the campus community. Must be able to develop, prepare and present all required course material. Must be able to operate computers. Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position and must adjust any teaching to the Americans with Disabilities Act provisions. Must be able to develop new course offerings, as necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in English

  • 1 year of full-time (or equivalent) teaching experience at the College level

  • Must have experience teaching in a technology-enhanced classroom, and experience using a course management system such as Brightspace or Blackboard.

    Desirable Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English or related field

  • 3 or more years of instructional experience at the community college level
