Job Description

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. The TxSSC serves as the clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas. As a result, Texas has become a national leader in school safety practices and is relied upon for assistance and guidance from jurisdictions throughout the nation.

The TxSSC welcomes applicants for the position of Lead School Safety Readiness Specialist who have extensive experience within an organization that serves at the local, state, or federal level. This position will be responsible for conducting the statewide review, verification, and follow-up of multi-hazard emergency operations plans for all K-12 districts, charter school districts, and community colleges in Texas to ensure compliance with state school safety legislation related to emergency operations planning. This position will also be responsible for ongoing research and development of best practices related to school emergency operation plans, documentation and reporting, the development of EOP training, toolkits, and resources for Texas school districts. The goal of these systems is to improve the overall safety and security in our educational environments across Texas.

Job Duties

  • A successful applicant must be able to expand the capabilities of the TxSSC and conduct statewide reviews and verification for multi-hazard emergency operations plans as required in the legislation. This position will be responsible for learning and successfully using the internal systems developed to facilitate the review and verification of multi-hazard emergency operations plans. This position will also be responsible for ensuring the latest best practices in school safety and emergency operations planning are integrated into all systems developed by the TxSSC.

  • This position will oversee the quality assurance of verified multi-hazard emergency operations plans and specific tasks and projects under the leadership of the Readiness Supervisor, Associate Director of School Safety Readiness, as well as work collaboratively with the Training and Education division to develop training and resources that will assist school districts with successfully meeting school safety compliance measures related to emergency operations planning. This position will also analyze data to include writing reports, maintain records of project activities, create presentations, communicate effectively with team members, leadership, and stakeholders. This position will need to have strategic and innovative thinking measures to ensure compliance and understanding risk in the development of projects and tasks. This position will work directly with the Readiness Supervisor. Additionally, this role may entail performing other duties as assigned to support the needs of the organization.
