Kaiser Permanente Hospital Aide II in San Marcos, California

Job Summary:

The Hospital Aide II has the responsibility for assisting the Registered Nurse with unit supplies and equipment which directly or indirectly impacts patient care. She/he works with and supports the nursing team in providing services, which meets the patient and unit areas.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Under Nursing supervision, transport patients, supplies, and equipment within the Medical Center; assembles and maintains required equipment and performs related requested duties. Duties include indirect patient care activities (patient positioning, transportation) and other functions under direction of the nursing staff. Adheres to all department standards of attendance and dress. Maintains regular attendance in the workplace as outlined in the Regional Attendance Program and/or department policy regarding attendance and tardiness. Observes all policies, procedures, and rules/regulations relative to the TIME System. Displays clearly visible identification, stating name, title, and department in support of the Infant Security Policy and Procedure. Maintains the privacy and confidentiality of both member and employee with regard to medical records, diagnosis, conditions and status in support of the Corporate Compliance and HIPAA Standards. Attends educational inservices, as required. Demonstrates understanding of and adherence to sterile technique. Observes body fluid/substance precautions, i.e. Universal Precautions, at all times. Maintains standards of professional behavior established to enhance quality of service. Greets patients/family promptly and courteously with eye contact, pleasant expression, and tone of voice. Calls patients and family members by their preferred names. Treats all patients in accordance with the Patients Bill of Rights Conducts only work related conversations when patients are waiting for service.

  • Demonstrates good communication skills. Communicates verbally in a clear and concise manner. Provides written communication that is accurate, complete, and legible; routes such communication appropriately and in timely manner, utilizing available resources, such as, unit communication book and white board in utility room. Listens intently to instruction and shift report from off-going aide or surgical technician. Provides appropriate report to on-coming shift aide or surgical technician of unit activity and needs. Takes initiative in the identification of problems that affect patient care and utilizes the chain of command appropriately for problem resolution. Takes initiative to report identified operational problems to appropriate departments and provide follow-up report, as needed, to department management. Abides by computer security practices and enters data into computer appropriately (i.e. EMSR, KPDS, Transportation/VIP, HUGS Infant Security information). Communicates effectively with other departments to promote positive interdepartmental relationships. Communicates in the English language while in the patient care setting, except when acting as an interpreter. Demonstrates professional demeanor in all interactions with patients and staff. Strives to maintain good working relationships and rapport with patients, other members of the department, and the health care team. Responds positively to constructive criticism and offers plan for improvement.

  • Functions under direction of RN within defined scope of position. Recognizes limitations and seeks assistance to learn unfamiliar functions. Responds to emergency patient call and provides emergency care as needed. Assists Hospital Unit Coordinator when time permits to: answer patient call lights, Stentofon, and telephones promptly. Assists with filing and other paperwork duties. Attends or reads minutes of department staff meetings - minimum of 50% annually. Documents completion by initialing sign-in sheet provided. Maintains documentation of current work requirements (i.e. CPR, PPD) Knowledgeable of Unit and Hospital quality improvement projects. Participates in the Department Quality Improvement activities or submits information or areas of concern to Unit Based QI members or management. Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting to workload fluctuations impacted by unit activity. Able to organize, plan and set priorities and complete work with minimal assistance and within designated working hours. Responsible to take allotted shift rest periods and meal break; notifies Charge Nurse and manager if unable to take breaks. Seeks other duties from the Charge Nurse or management when work is completed and unit activity is decreased. Maintains equipment, supplies and work area in accordance with department guidelines. Restocks medications in locked supply cupboards in labor rooms. Checks Peds cupboard supplies at least daily and signs off sign-in sheet posted in each cupboard. Keeps equipment and work area clean and organized. Routinely handles equipment with care to avoid damage. Reports equipment malfunctions to appropriate department staff promptly (biomedical or engineering). Performs duties with an awareness of safety and cost containment.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • At least six (6) months experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Hospital Aide in an acute care setting or equivalent; or completion of one (1) academic year in an accredited nursing program that includes clinical experience.

  • Heavy Physical demands. Frequent pulling, pushing and lifting of supplies and equipment; occasional assistance in positioning of patients. Walking and standing most of the time on duty.

Education

  • High school diploma OR General Education Diploma (GED) required.

  • This is a fast paced ambulatory surgery department that works as a high performing team. Perioperative or surgical experience a plus.
