Description

Established energy company has an immediate opening for a Patent Counsel! This Patent Counsel will join a growing legal team and report to the General Counsel. As a Patent Counsel with this organization, you'll work closely with other team members in building and maintaining a patent portfolio, while also interacting with engineering, product, and business groups to provide legal advice on all aspects of intellectual property, and on various contract matters. As an integral part of our team, you will be working closely with various levels of R& D and cross-functional teams, aiding in the development and strengthening of patents to support products. This position requires full-time on-site work in San Jose, CA. The ideal candidate will have at least 4-6 years of experience working as an IP attorney with a focus on patent prosecution and have an electrical engineering background/degree.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee and participate in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications worldwide

• Prepare infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate opinions

• Develop strategic plans for R& D and Product groups on patent development and strengthening

• Provide legal counsel by participating in various levels of R& D and other cross-functional team meetings

• Identify research that may qualify for the filing of patent applications

• Conduct educational seminars and courses on intellectual property for clients

• Collaborate with outside counsel on opinions and assist them in communicating with the right contacts and gathering correct information

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Must possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school

• Admitted to a State Bar and the USPTO

• Electrical Engineering degree

• A minimum of four years of experience as a practicing attorney in patent prosecution

• Experience with preparation and prosecution of US patents

• Skilled with preparation of infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate opinions
