Compensation: $25.00 hourly 

Appointment Type: This position is a temporary exempt, as-needed appointment. This position is seasonal and will not result in an eligible list for a permanent civil service position. Employees serve at the will of the Appointing Officer.

The Recreation & Park Department is hiring multiple positions in job class 9910 – Public Service Trainee – Workreation Program – School Year 2024/2025.  Interested applicants are encouraged to apply immediately.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then apply to work for San Francisco Recreation and Parks Workreation Youth Employment Program. Assignments include activities such as arts and crafts, sports, cooking, gardening, facility support and so much more. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Workreation Youth Employment Program may be your ticket to a great school year!

Now in our 64th year, the Workreation school year program has offered local young people the opportunity to become a part of the workforce, tackle new challenges, learn responsibility and professionalism, and gain valuable job skills. There are many interesting and rewarding jobs that could benefit from your youthful energy, enthusiasm, special skills, and expertise.

Assignments are in various neighborhood park and recreation center locations and include activities such as arts and crafts, sports, cooking, gardening, facility support and so much more.  The basic work week schedule is Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday and up to 15 hours weekly.  Schedules will vary depending on the assignment and may include evenings and weekends. These positions are subject to budgetary constraints.

Eligible high school students can apply to one of four (4) types of WORKREATION jobs:

  • After School Assistant: Do you enjoy working with kids? Apply to work in one of Recreation and Park's afterschool programs in one of our recreation centers or neighborhood parks.  Help with homework and recreation activities including sports, arts & crafts, cooking, field trips, and special events.

  • Facility Assistant:  Apply for a job in one of Recreation and Park's many recreation centers facility. Working in one of our facilities you will be responsible for facility preparation including set up and/or breakdown for events, facility monitoring, interacting with the public at the front desk, and maintaining the facility's public displays.

  • Green Assistant: Enjoy working in the outdoors? Apply for a job assisting our gardeners in keeping our parks clean and beautiful including planting and weeding.

  • Pool Assistant: Apply for a job in one of Recreation and Park's many swimming pools. Working in one of our pools, you will be responsible for setup and/or breakdown for events, pool monitoring, interacting with the public at the front desk, and maintaining the pool’s public displays.

The school year program will run mid October 2024 to late May 2025.  Selected and hired applicants must attend mandatory trainings, and new employee orientation scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Randall Museum, 11 am. 

Minimum Qualifications:

1.     Applicants must be a currently enrolled high school student and be between 14 and 18 years of age as of October 12, 2024.  (Verification of age will be required); AND

2.     Applicants must possess a Social Security Card, valid picture identification, and documents that establish both identity and employment eligibility, such as a birth certificate, state issued proof of identity or proof of a legal right to work in the United States; AND

3.     Applicants must be a San Francisco resident AND attending high school in San Francisco during the academic year 2024-2025 (Proof may be requested at any time).  

Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Work Permit. HOWEVER, students should NOT request a work permit until notified of a job offer.

Desirable Qualifications 

Experience in leadership, volunteer work, participation in organized art or sport activities; ability to type, word processing and/or computer graphics skills; bilingual skills, including American Sign Language (ASL); strong verbal communication skills; ability to write well; participation in a sport, art, or day camp and experience working in ethnically and socially diverse communities are desired. Of particular interest is direct experience in recreation/aquatics, gardening or office/clerical work.

Panel Oral Interview:  The week of July 29, 2024 

Qualified applicants will be invited for a panel oral interview the last week of July.  Interview notices with date, time, and location will be sent out via email the week prior to interviews.   We appreciate your understanding as we are unable to accommodate interviews outside of these dates. Please plan accordingly as there will be no make-ups available.
