The Senior Director – Laboratory Operations & Environmental, Health & Safety is responsible for developing and managing Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) programs to meet the company’s strategic and tactical needs in coordination with members of the Asset Services and Facilities teams. This individual will partner with multiple asset services managers and building engineers to ensure that Alexandria’s multi-tenant buildings are operated in a safe and compliant manner. Further, this individual will interface with Alexandria tenants to align tenant EH&S programs with those of Alexandria and in accordance with lease requirements. In addition to these primary responsibilities, this individual will work closely with the Leasing and Real Estate Development teams as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operating Property and Asset Services Support

  • Develop and administer a program to periodically review tenant chemical quantities to ensure adherence to permitted limits.

  • Provide guidance and support to tenants and initiate new tenant services as required, primarily in multi-tenant buildings.

  • Establish, administer, and update specific EH&S programs, including records management, for compliance with county, state, and federal requirements.

  • Manage and direct EH&S consultants and external vendors of supporting services in facilities, excluding Alexandria LaunchLabs® and Alexandria AscentLabs®, across the region.

  • Develop policies, practices, and procedures as necessary (e.g., SOPs, safety procedures, and biosafety protocols).

  • Real Estate Development and Capital Projects

  • Provide input on design of spec suites and multi-tenant buildings based on current and future lab EH&S and usage trends.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert pertaining to chemical storage management strategies (for control areas, lab suites, etc.) for multi-tenant buildings.

  • Ensure that all aspects of readiness for occupancy are in place to support incoming tenants’ readiness for their fire department permit.

  • Develop and implement appropriate fire department requirements (signage, clear pathways to storage rooms, etc.) and apply for and obtain flammable chemical licenses for all buildings.

  • Other Regional Support

  • Develop a safety training program tailored to the focus and specific risks of our business and administer training at appropriate intervals.

  • Engage with state, county, and city regulatory agencies as necessary.

  • Support due diligence associated with real estate transactions.

  • Provide strategic and proactive direction on initiatives that will improve EH&S performance and minimize risks and exposures.

  • Stay informed on current and new regulatory and lab requirements, as well as other guidelines, and consider the potential for implementation in the regional portfolio. Communicate significant regulatory and technical information to appropriate personnel.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in life sciences, engineering, EH&S, or related discipline required.

  • 5+ years of experience running a science laboratory required.

  • Expert-level knowledge and application of EH&S regulations and familiarity with relevant EH&S regulatory agencies’ protocols, including skills in developing or administering safety programs, required.

  • Experience in lab design, planning, and setup a plus.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact and collaborate with individuals at all levels and provide guidance and great customer service required.

  • Detail orientation, organization, and ability to consistently deliver timely and accurate results required.

  • The expected base salary range for this position is $145,000 USD to $195,000 USD annually. This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on the consideration of many factors, which may include, but are not limited to: the individual’s knowledge, experience, education, qualifications, skills, job location, and the Company’s compensation practices.
