Appointment Type: Permanent-Exempt (PEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer and shall not exceed 36 months.

The Building Design and Construction Division (BDC) of San Francisco Public Works, led by the City Architect, provides architectural and landscape design services, comprehensive building planning, project and construction management, contract support and compliance monitoring, materials testing and hazardous materials investigation for the development of new – and the upgrading of existing – civic buildings, facilities and urban landscapes to create a more resilient city.

Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Maintenance Planner (7262) within the Bureau of Building Design and Construction.

Under direction, as a Maintenance Planner, you will coordinate general grounds maintenance and repair activities on various public buildings, industrial facilities and public rights-of-way to achieve optimal efficiency of workforce, time, and equipment material.

This position will support various Facilities Renewal Program projects and the San Francisco Police Department Ingleside project.

Important and Essential Duties:

Your duties as a Maintenance Planner may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Investigating and evaluating departmental requests for maintenance and repairs, including ownership or departmental oversight on specific facilities, locations and City & County of San Francisco assets. This may include on-site inspections of machinery and structures.

  • Preparing cost estimates for maintenance and repair activities, developing and maintaining a list of materials and labor costs for recurring maintenance jobs.

  • Planning maintenance and repair schedules for routine and preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted operation of systems; developing new preventive maintenance procedures as required to adjust to changes in system operations, using patterns and new developments in maintenance and materials technologies.

  • Reporting difficult maintenance situations to the supervisor and advising a recommended course of action.

  • Preparing statistical and budgetary reports on all maintenance and repair activities.

  • May supervise the work of personnel such as estimators, schedulers and clerical staff by planning, assigning, coordinating and directing work assignments, drafting and reviewing performance plans, check-ins and appraisals for staff.

  • Maintaining and evaluating systems maintenance history records to ensure accurate and timely assessment of equipment and system performance for work performed, frequency of failure and labor and materials costs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

  1. Three (3) years of verifiable experience in one (1) of the following areas:

a) as a maintenance estimator and/or scheduler or equivalent in facilities (building utilities, related structures and equipment) maintenance;

b) as a maintenance planner for construction or facilities/equipment maintenance;

c) as a supervisor of journey-level workers in a construction or facilities/equipment maintenance related field;

OR

  1. Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level experience in a construction or facilities/equipment maintenance related field;

OR

  1. Completion of a minimum four (4) year Building and Trades certified apprenticeship program AND two (2) years journey-level of experience in a construction or facilities/equipment maintenance (a copy of apprenticeship certificate must be submitted with application)

Minimum Qualifications Notes:

For minimum qualifications #1, #2 and #3 listed above, the experience must include one (1) year using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) program.

AND

License:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements.
