General Atomics and Affiliated Companies Scientist Two-Photon Polymerization Production in San Diego, California

The General Atomics Energy, Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) group is seeking an experienced, motivated, and innovative Additive Manufacturing Scientist to join our fast paced and growing team, specifically in the field of Two-Photon Polymerization. This role requires expertise in polymer-resin based additive manufacturing, proficiency in laser optics, lab chemistry, metrology, software development, and CAD design software. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing and optimizing production processes for microscale and nanoscale structures.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and Optimization:

  • Design and execute experiments to develop and optimize two-photon polymerization processes.

  • Utilize expertise in laser optics to optimize laser parameters for precise control of polymerization.

  • Develop and characterize novel materials for use in two-photon polymerization.

  • Perform metrology and characterization of fabricated structures using advanced imaging and analytical techniques.

  • Utilize CAD design software to design and modify microscale and nanoscale structures.

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to troubleshoot issues and drive continuous improvement.

  • Troubleshoot and solve technical challenges related to materials, equipment, and process parameters.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful transfer of processes from R&D to production.

  • Production of high variability, low quantity parts and iterate to meet specifications.

  • Implement quality control measures to ensure consistency and reliability of manufactured products.

  • Stay current with advancements in two-photon polymerization technology and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

  • May provide direction to design staff or technicians.

  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; four or more years experience with a Bachelors degree and two or more years experience with a Masters degree. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education.

  • B.S. or M.S. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nano Engineering, Physics, or related field preferred.

  • Extensive experience with two-photon polymerization techniques and relevant equipment.

  • Proficiency in laser optics and experience with laser systems.

  • Strong background in lab chemistry, materials characterization, and metrology.

  • Experience with software development, including programming languages such as Python, Labview, C#, and/or MATLAB.

  • Proficiency in CAD design software for microscale and nanoscale structures.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to work with determined and experience professionals who value facts over opinions and drive for excellence.

  • Experience with cleanroom protocols and procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and problem-solve in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
