Job Summary

A Senior Lab Specialist position is available in the High Throughput Genomics Shared Resource at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute. The laboratory provides experimental expertise and services to researchers throughout the University of Utah for genomic applications that use the Illumina sequencing platform. The candidate should have attention to detail and meticulous work habits. The position requires molecular biology skills, the ability to operate complex instruments, excellent communication skills and good time management. Providing instruction, interpreting experimental outcomes and communicating experimental progress with customers of the laboratory is an essential component of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate Illumina sequencing libraries by Qubit assays, Agilent TapeStation assays and qPCR with the Kapa Library Quantification Kit.

  • Normalize and pool Illumina libraries in preparation for sequencing.

  • Prepare sequencing libraries for diverse sample types that may include DNA , RNA , Exome, ChIP-seq, methyl-seq, Single Cell, and Visium spatial gene expression.

  • Operate and maintain highly specialized sequencing instruments including the Illumina NovaSeq and the Illumina MiSeq,

  • Document Illumina sequence run performance and prepare reports to evaluate run metrics for individual projects.

  • Interface with technical support when necessary to troubleshoot instruments within the lab.

  • Communicate experimental progress with customers

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
