Job Summary

Responsible for preparing and filing federal tax forms relative to payments to foreign nationals and companies. Performs complex tax accounting compliance analysis. Meets critical payroll processing and external source deadlines. Provides assistance to tax related questions.

This position requires the ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles, tax compliance regulations and University policies and procedures to a variety of situations. The Senior Accountant must be able to interpret complex policies and effectively communicate the information in an easily understood manner. Will be required to provide analysis of each situation and use professional judgment in reaching a solution. Will recommend changes to accounting and processes based upon analysis performed and specialized knowledge.

While this position is intended to work on campus, it also has the ability to telework remotely for a portion of each week. An employee hired into this role who telecommutes will be responsible for providing space, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and sign the University of Utah Telecommuting Agreement.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Prepares and files federal tax forms. Prepares tax withholding deposits with respect to foreign payments. Must meet critical payroll reporting and other deadlines.

  • Interviews international student, faculty, researcher employees to determine tax status and treaty benefit based on complex international tax regulations.

  • Reviews and approves foreign payments to individuals and companies with the use of tax compliance software.

  • Facilitates and manages tax reporting processes of the IRS 1042-S and 1099 forms.

  • Performs general ledger reconciliations, reviews withholding transactions, and processes journal entries and corrections to resolve errors.

  • Knowledge of 1099 Express accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills.

  • Interacts with external agencies such as Internal Revenue Service with respect to assigned responsibilities.

  • Interprets University policies and authority sources and organizes communication, instructions, and training to guide stakeholders accordingly.

  • Provides excellent customer service.

  • Responsible person on other assigned departmental tasks and projects.

Problem Solving

  • Often selects from a predetermined list of alternatives and sometimes recommends or changes policy and procedure based upon amount of discretion given by department.

  • Problems would be referred to superior based upon predetermined guidelines set by the department.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus two years professional accounting experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices, knowledge of accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills, the ability to write queries and macros and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills.

Certifications as a Certified Public Accountant may be preferred for certain positions.

Preferences

Have or working towards master’s degree in Accounting or MBA .
