Job Summary

The Marriott Library is seeking an undergraduate student in computer science, data science, or a related discipline to assist with research data management efforts on campus. This position will allow the hired student to gain data literacy skills, practical experience in their field of study, and mentoring from the Marriott Library’s data librarians. It is an especially helpful opportunity for students seeking to work in data analytics, data science, or computer science. Applicants should have experience working with data and knowledge of SQL , R, and/or APIs.

This position is aimed at providing a student with experience in data science or data analytics. As such, specific responsibilities will be decided on by the student in collaboration with supervisors to ensure a beneficial experience that aligns with their skills and interests. The hired student will initially be responsible for reporting on the University of Utah’s research data repository using a SQL database and compiling citation statistics for datasets produced by the University’s researchers.

The hired student will work directly with the Marriott Library’s Research Data Librarians, Kaylee Alexander and Madison Golden. This position may be done on-site in the Marriott Library or virtually. On-site work may be required up to 50% of the time, with additional on-site time during onboarding.

For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception is granted.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting on the University of Utah’s research data repository, The Hive

  • Citation tracking and reporting for datasets produced by University of Utah researchers

  • Additional responsibilities will be dependent on the hired students qualifications and interests, but may include utilizing APIs, generating data visualizations, and more!

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.

Preferences

  • Interest in working with data, data analytics, and reporting

  • Undergraduate student in computer science, data science, or related disciplines.

  • Experience in SQL or R.

  • Experience working with APIs, web scraping, or other web technologies.

  • Ability to work creatively and collaboratively as well as independently.

  • Willingness to learn complex procedures and new technologies.

  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.

  • Good English comprehension and written language skills.
