Job Summary

This position provides assistance and support for the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (DoPEM) in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah School of Medicine, in its mission to conduct clinical research.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Determines patient eligibility for a specific project; recruits and enrolls patients in research studies. Obtains informed consent and answers subject inquiries; trouble-shoots and problem solves recruitment and related patient flow processes.

  • Obtains and copies necessary information from patient medical records. Abstracts pertinent information from those records according to study protocol using knowledge of medical procedures, processes, terminology, and research regulatory standards.

  • Collects, compiles and enters data into study databases. May also monitor databases for accuracy and quality.

  • Compiles and organizes all information related to research projects.

  • Participates in shared on-call responsibilities for enrolling study patients.

  • Works under the direction of project investigator and other research personnel in the design, organization, and preparation of clinical research projects. Coordinates with project team members to meet project goals and deadlines.

  • Complies with all research protocols to achieve integrity in the clinical research conducted within DoPEM.

  • Performs other necessary research support functions as assigned by PI, manager, clinical research coordinator, or division chief.

  • Attends and participates in division Research Team Coordination meetings.

  • Demonstrates initiative, enthusiasm, positive attitude, teamwork, and commitment to the research mission of DoPEM and the department by providing assistance and support as needed and where directed.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Minimum Qualifications

One year research experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated organizational and communication skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. An understanding of research protocols and procedures preferred.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
