State of Utah - Jobs Native Aquatics Biologist II in PRICE, Utah

Job Title: Native Aquatic Biologist II Job Description The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is looking for an outgoing solid leader for a Wildlife Biologist ll position (Native Fisheries Biologist).  The biologist is responsible for planning and implementation of projects conducted for Utah Wildlife Action Plan species,which includes several state-sensitive species managed under multi-agency conservation agreements (e.g.,Bluehead Sucker,Flannelmouth Sucker,Roundtail Chub,Boreal Toad).  This position has the unique opportunity to collect information on sensitive aquatic species that can directly affect decisions to preclude federal listing under the Endangered Species Act.  Although a demanding field schedule that covers Utah's expansive Southeastern Region,the skills and expertise gained through this position are invaluable. Principal Duties As the Native Aquatics Biologist,you will:

  • Plan,prepare for,and organize sampling and conservation efforts for native fishes (the largest portion of the workload),amphibians/reptiles,and mollusks.
  • Supervise field crews of up to eight personnel while conducting surveys.
  • Management,organization,analysis,interpret data collected through field activities.
  • Coordinate with other agencies to determine research activities,and management priorities,conduct surveys,and accomplish conservation goals.
  • Provide management recommendations to the Regional Aquatics Program Manager,Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Salt Lake City staff,and associated partner agencies.
  • Draft technical reports for research activities and provide presentations for statewide conservation team meetings and professional conferences.
  • Perform statistical analysis on datasets with the ability to provide biologically meaningful interpretations of data through graphical representations.
  • Identify and implement new scopes of work; means for the propagation of state-sensitive fish is currently a main priority.

The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for this position has:

  • Ability to plan and prepare for field operations: identify access points,contact landowners and other agencies to conduct sampling,assemble necessary equipment,and organize field crews,including seasonal hiring and scheduling.
  • Extensive experience with various electrofishing equipment,fish sampling techniques,and use of specialized equipment for fisheries data collection (i.e.,data logger and PIT technology).
  • Extensive boating experience (Jon boats,rafts,canoes),including operation of motors,trailering,and mechanical aptitude to make field repairs in remote locations.
  • extensive crew leadership experience; ability to manage large crews,multiple personalities,and coordinate volunteer participation.
  • ability to build working relationships with multiple agencies through effective collaborations.
  • skills to use various computer software programs used in biological research.
  • knowledge and use of safety protocols associated with field surveys.
  • demonstrated ability to work well with others and independently.

Preference will be given to candidates* with a bachelor s degree in a natural resources field. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in a wildlife-related natural resources field or other a pplicable field that is beneficial for the position. Preference for years of demonstrated successful full-time work experience will vary based on the specific position.  *Additional preference may be given to applicants with an MS in Aquatic Biology (Fisheries based preferred.)
