University of Utah Health Donation Education Liaison in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

This position is responsible for coordinating quality improvement activities, staff education and development regarding donation after cardiac death cases. They function as a preceptor for students and act as a resource to external contacts and hospital staff in coordinating the repair and replacement of instruments and equipment. They work with the Service Director to identify hospital specific educational needs. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts After Action Review on all Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD) cases and other potential deceased donor cases with request.

  • Reviews Monthly QI, death records, and unit based responses with all missed or late referrals.

  • Plans education lectures to healthcare teams including respiratory therapy, nursing, social work, continuing care, etc.

  • Participates in all DCD cases.

  • Participates in committees and subcommittees regarding donation: Organ Donation Committee, Coalition for Organ Donation, Subcommittee for Organ Donation month activities, End of Life steering committee.

  • Facilitates monthly death record review, and collects deceased donor details for monthly case review, and deceased donor trend reports (unit and hospital outcomes).

  • Volunteers in community education and services (fund raising, educational opportunities).

  • Reviews policy's related to donation.

  • Provides donor related reports to units and submits deceased donation reports to administration.

  • Assists with identifying referrals.

  • Assists with hands on donor related medical management.

  • Facilitates implementation of technology solution to improve early referral and donor conversion rate.

  • Provides family support throughout 24 - 48 hour process.

  • Ensures compliance of organ donation process improvement activities as required to maintain American College of Surgeons Level 1 Trauma Center Verification and other accrediting agencies.

  • Takes an active role in increasing and education all units about tissue donation.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.

  • Demonstrated leadership, human relations, and effective communication skills.

  • Demonstrated skills in teaching and directing employees.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • 2 years critical care experience.

  • Currently working as a critical care RN at the University of Utah Health system.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners and behavioral health patients.
